15th century Burgundy, a priory from the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem

Location

In a village, along an old Roman road, in the heart of historic Burgundy, that of Grand Dukes and brotherhoods, from the Order of the Golden Fleece to the hospitaller civilization of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.
Close to the A31 motorway, more than 188 miles from Paris.

Description

This priory, built in the 15th century as a dwelling for the commander of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, was modified in the 17th century, following the Gallas invasions.
Farm buildings were annexed to it.
Today, five houses are spread out on almost an acre of land, to which a meadow of approx. 1 acre, accommodating several horses, is to be added.
The priory is one of these five houses. It spans 1,561 sq ft of living space on three floors. The ground floor includes a kitchen, toilet and bathroom; the first floor has one bedroom with an adjoining bathroom, and there are two bedrooms on the second floor.
Renovated French ceilings look down on the original stone floor tiles and stairway leading to the upper floors.
The roofing with its lava roof tiles is typical of 15th century buildings.
Two other houses were converted into holiday homes, one of which is still being used as such with two bedrooms, bathroom, toilet, kitchen on the first floor and a lounge. Entirely renovated, the other is laid out as two vast rooms on split levels; neither room has any partition walls. 2,153 sq ft of living space on top of the 1,561 sq ft of the priory itself.
The other buildings include barns, a bread oven, an old single storey house; a total of approx. 3,929 sq ft. One of the barns has a horse riding arena.
The property also features a small area of parklands or gardens.

Our opinion

The small village is full of charm and gastronomic delights: set menu restaurants, biological produce, one of the best bakers in France has his wood-fired oven there.
To the imaginary knights and underground passageways leading from this residence to church crypts, can be added the gastronomy for which Burgundy is famous.
With the proximity of Dijon, it would be possible to convert the outbuildings differently and develop a rural holiday accommodation or bed and breakfast activity.
