17th century dovecote and its former vine grower’s cottage between Tours and Amboise

Location

In a hamlet, on the south bank of the Loire, approx. 20 km (13 miles) from the centre of Tours (French TGV train station putting Paris 1 hour away).
Although set in rural surroundings, the house is not isolated.
The river can be seen in the distance.

Description

Along and atop the hillside, in an old walled garden of more than 4,000 m² (1 acre), planted with beautiful trees including an outstanding cedar tree.
The house: a former vine grower’s dwelling, very likely extended in the 19th century so as to transform it into a middle-class house.
Approx. 230 m² (2,476 sq ft) of living space.
Ground floor: wonderful entrance hall, lounge, dining room, troglodyte room with bread oven and kitchen.
Upstairs: landing, 4 bedrooms, one of which is small, 2 bathrooms, 2 shower rooms.
Terracotta floor tiles or parquet flooring throughout, fireplaces.
The entire house is in need of some attention.
The dovecote: this 17th century building is impressive not only because of its size and but also because it dominates the property.
Transformed into a 30 m² (323 sq ft) guest house: living room with kitchen area on the ground floor, bedroom and bathroom upstairs.
Terracotta floor tiles and attractive exposed beams.
Several superb cellars set in the rock as a reminder of the property’s vine-growing past.
Barn currently used as a garage.

Our opinion

Set in the heart of the Loire chateaux, this property is ideally situated less than 30 minutes from the regional capital, from its TGV train station, its good secondary schools and sixth form colleges.
True, it requires works to install modern-day home comforts, but it is full of potential.
