A Renaissance-style house with a listed ceiling
in the Champagne region

Location

This Renaissance period house is situated in one of the principal old bishoprics of the Dukes of Burgundy, in the heart of the old town, in the residential district of the preserved sector.
Access is very easy via a small French SNCF train station, the A5 and A31 motorways, or even a nearby aerodrome.

Description

This house was built in 1580 by the local nobility. It comprises two buildings, both spanning three stories, which are connected by a beautiful stairway, most probably a vestige of an old building from the Middle Ages which stood on the town ramparts. The latter are, moreover, visible from the windows of the upper floors. A small inner courtyard is included in the property. The first building on the street has a simple facade with large windows that let in copious amounts of light.

A library and wainscoting, put in place by Jacques Garcia, a well-known decorator, adorn the walls of one of the spacious main rooms. This lounge has many 17th century features: the fireplace, the old terracotta floor tiling and the French ceiling. Said ceiling is listed by the French Historic Monument Society, for the embellishment of its paintings. According to the Society, the most visible of these beams “shows three decorated sides alternating interlacing decoration, and in the centre, a landscape medallion”. A toilet is hidden behind one section of the wainscoting.
On the second floor of this building is a second lounge or large dining room with a marble fireplace and a French ceiling, a bedroom with its bathroom and toilet looks on to the small inner courtyard.
A corridor area has been set up as an additional kitchen.
In the second building, all the rooms adjoin one another: on the ground floor, a kitchen, a laundry room, on the first floor, two bedrooms and a bathroom, on the second floor, a bedroom and a dressing room.
Then there is the attic (approx. 2,153 sq ft) which with the above two buildings accounts for a total surface area of approx. 5,597 sq ft. A cellar divided into two sections can be accessed from the small inner courtyard.

Our opinion

This house has some beautiful assets such as its stucco decoration, its wainscoting, its listed French ceiling, and its medieval dressed-stone stairway. It has two lounges of an exceptional size for a house in the centre of town.
However, the possibilities in terms of decoration and layout have not been exhausted. The walls of this house form a treasure chest in which the future owners will be able to work.
