15th-16th century residence with parklands in one of the most beautiful villages in France

Location

30 miles from Brive-la-Gaillarde (airport, SNCF train station, A20 & A89 motorways), 34 miles from Limoges (international airport, SNCF train station, A20 motorway).
Where the French departments of the Dordogne, Haute-Vienne and Corrèze meet, on the edge of the Périgord-Limousin Natural Regional Park. A beautiful area where numerous rivers make their way, often in gorges, through the wooded hills and flowering orchards. A haven for fishermen as well as hikers and pony trekkers, not to mention lovers of wide-open spaces who appreciate the changing pace and colours of the seasons. Scenery that encourages the peaceful exploration of an awe-inspiring historic heritage, unjustly not so well known as that of the neighbouring Black Périgord.
Here, medieval fortresses, Renaissance-style residences, abbeys, old stone bridges, water mills, including some genuine masterpieces, brave the ravages of time and bear witness to the prosperity of the region: Arnac, Pompadour, Coussac-Bonneval, Ségur le château, St Robert, Excideuil, Saint Mesmin, Hautefort, Jumilhac, and more.

Description

Situated in a medieval village listed as one of the most beautiful in France, birthplace of regional feudalism, and part of the route taken by Richard the Lionheart. Encircled by wooded surroundings dotted with numerous cross-country trails, a preserved and protected village built on the edge of the water beneath the former fortified castle that guaranteed its defence.
Bordered by the river flowing into a gentle waterfall, in an ideal, peaceful setting, the property comprises approx. three quarters of an acre of harmoniously laid out, wooded parklands. Its features include a rose garden, a water-free garden and flower beds. Looking at it conjures up the image of an oil painting.
The listed dwelling is a former noble residence, probably dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, complete with an impressive spiral stairway tower as well as wonderful mullioned and checkrail windows with sculpted frames. Built of granite with a slate roof, the dwelling spans four stories with approx. 2,153 sq ft of living space.
Both the outside and the inside have been entirely and fastidiously restored by a history-loving architect to include home comforts and maintain authenticity. The spirit of the dwelling remains untouched, space is cleverly optimized and standards are scrupulously observed. The rooms are laid out around a wide spiral stairway, illuminated via the windows, creating a show of lights reflected by the colours in the stone, as if to better highlight the stylish wear of the hallmarks of time on each of the steps.
A large lounge-dining room, a kitchen with its adjoining storeroom, a hallway with cloakroom and toilet, a reading room, two spacious bedrooms with en suite bathrooms and a dressing room, one of which opens on to a small balcony, and a library at the top of the tower.
Far from the austerity of the confined structure from olden times, the rooms are spacious and airy, making the residence warm and welcoming. The period features are part of this general atmosphere: exposed woodwork and beams, stone corbels, old parquet floors, impressive granite fireplaces crowned with a thick solid wood lintel, recesses, and old trimmed doors.
A tool shed, a cellar and a small amount of attic space cleverly conserved for storage purposes complete the building.

Our opinion

A proud-looking, fully restored residence in the heart of a magnificent medieval city with all amenities, the history of which likes to be reflected in the water running through it.
The charm of the lovingly tended, wooded and flowing parklands where we can appreciate the surrounding beauty in total peace and quiet, and take comfort from the babbling waterfall. The change of scenery is guaranteed, and the region is a genuine invitation to explore unspoilt countryside and an abundance of heritage, with no reason to envy neighbouring areas.
