Village house with garden bordered by a river in the French department of Corrèze

Location

Approx. 45 minutes from the towns of Brive-La-Gaillarde and Limoges (international airports, French SNCF train stations, A20 and A89 motorways).
Where the French departments of Dordogne, Haute-Vienne and Corrèze meet, on the outskirts of the Périgord-Limousin National Regional Park. A beautiful area where numerous rivers make their way, often through gorges, amongst wooded hills and flowering orchards. In the centre of a peaceful village classified amongst the most beautiful in France, birthplace of regional feudalism. Encircled by wooded surroundings dotted with numerous cross-country trails, a preserved and protected village built on the edge of the water beneath the former fortified castle that guaranteed its defence.
Bearing the mark of a glorious past, the architectural wealth is obvious here. Each house is a pleasure to behold; each narrow lane brings yet another feat of the builders of olden times to the fore.

Description

Situated in a small square marking the start of a narrow passageway leading a little way away to the banks of a superb river, this four-storey house (including the attic space), is a group of three buildings set at right angles, the origins of the main building dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries.
The facade facing the street is of a traditional, local stone construction, topped with a half-timbered gable.
Moreover, it bears witness to the fact that its extension was no doubt lowered at one time, but not rebuilt. Four entrances provide access to the buildings. A configuration therefore that would easily enable the different sections to become independent, and promote complete privacy in the event of guests.
To the rear of the building are a courtyard (100 m² / 1,076 sq ft), a small stone and wood construction used as a shed and a henhouse, as well as a wooded garden stretching down to the river bank. A wonderful view point that is shared by the bedroom situated on the garden level as well as the private terrace that accompanies it.

There is a total of approx. 220 m² (2,368 sq ft) of living space, excluding the cellars and the attic space which could be converted (two attics with a floor surface area of 57 m² / 613 sq ft and 42 m² / 452 sq ft). The spacious rooms are bathed in a superb luminosity. Works carried out to date bestow a warm, pleasant atmosphere on the property, as does the highlighting of the period features such as the large fireplaces, the doors and floorboards, the stone stairway and the exposed beams. The main rooms include a large living room; a spacious kitchen-dining room; a bedroom on the garden level that leads on to a terrace, as well as a private bathroom; a study that could also be used as a spare bedroom and that also overlooks a small terrace; a flat comprising a living room, a bedroom and a shower room.

Our opinion

This warm, welcoming home could easily be converted. The layout of the inside is as original as it is unexpected, and it features pleasant rooms bathed in a superb luminosity. The possibility of creating independent subdivisions is an asset and enthusiasts will be delighted to learn that extensions can also be envisaged. Strolling through this village classed amongst the most beautiful in France is always a genuine pleasure. The setting is magnificent, and each house bears witness to the great wealth of the region’s architectural heritage. And yet, large numbers of visitors are decidedly lacking. The site is, without doubt unjustly, unknown, but is that really unfortunate? Here, life can be lived peacefully and the tranquillity, the surrounding charm and the quality of the “terroir” fully appreciated.
