A Louis XIII style house in the Auge region

Location

Two hours away from Paris, via the A13 motorway which can be accessed 4 km (2.5 miles) away. Deauville is easily reached in 15 minutes via the countryside. All shops and schools are 5 minutes away by car as this property stands on the outskirts of a village which does not have any. Normandy grasslands extend down to the sea behind the property.

Description

The property Coming from the motorway, it marks the entrance to the village, on the edge of a secondary road. It is perfectly surrounded by its parklands which provide it with a certain privacy. Spanning a surface area of approx. 5,880 m² (1.45 acres), the grounds consist of a wooded area, a vegetable garden and another relaxation area. The buildings in each have been adapted to suit the area.
The property is accessed via automatic gates that open on to a driveway that encircles the house.

The house
It was built by a German baroness around 1860. Since this time, the layout of its rooms, their size and the unspoilt setting have successively seduced three village mayors. Built of bricks, the outside has not been transformed in any way. A prominent, narrow, central part of the building, with a balcony covering the main entrance, is flanked by two other symmetrical parts. The entire building is topped with a steep slate roof that is in a good state of repair and features Jacobin-style dormer windows. The ground floor windows are framed with bricks, whereas upstairs there are monolithic dressed stone lintels just like the dormers.
The entrance hall contains a stairway, opens left into the lounge with its fireplace which leads into the bar and the dining room. The terracotta floor tiles were laid 29 years ago by the current owner, but are over 200 years old. The kitchen and its corridor which open into the dining room also lead to the study, thus coming back around to the entrance hall. On the first floor, a landing leads to a bedroom with a bathroom which opens on to the facade balcony. On the other side, a corridor leads to three bedrooms, a bathroom and a toilet. The second floor comprises two bedrooms and a shower room. All have parquet flooring and a cupboard. An attic awaiting conversion has an exposed roofing framework and covers the entire property. The cellar runs under the entire property.
With ceilings that are almost 3 m (9.8 ft) high and its large windows, this house is not only luminous but also very spacious.

The outbuildings
A brick garage for a car. A garden shed, a storeroom, a henhouse and a greenhouse all are built of bricks.

Our opinion

This property has spacious, luminous rooms. A more fashionable decoration would breathe charm back into the inside. The parklands are very pleasant and it is most unusual to find so many different atmospheres in grounds of this size.
