In the Auge region,
17th century cider mill

Location

2 hours from Paris on the A13 motorway, 10 minutes from the Pont-l’Eveque interchange and 20 minutes from the seaside resort of Deauville; on the outskirts of a typical Normandy village which also has shops and a school.

Description

The property
At the end of a little used country lane, the property is surrounded by other old cider mills and apple orchards. It is entered via a lane; from there a driveway borders the orchards and leads to an old press facing the house.
The cider mill with all its equipment is behind the house.

The house
Built in 1636, this cider mill, along with the rest of the hamlet, belonged to a clan, after which the site of the property is now named. The construction is typical of Normandy housing at that time: lower sections made of stone and flint, then half-timbering, here with fragmented tiles, all topped with a gable roof. The house currently has a slate roof. Originally designed for sheltering men and beasts, the house still has two stories. The ground floor has rectangular terracotta floor tiles throughout. The entrance opens into the lounge with its stone and beam fireplace. Adjoining, and three steps lower down, is another lounge with a monumental fireplace coming from the French department of Manche. The dining room opens into the kitchen on the other side of the entrance lounge. Upstairs, a stairway with a landing leads to two large bedrooms, including one with a cathedral ceiling, and a bathroom. Via another stairway, also with a landing, are two bedrooms including one with a fireplace, and a bathroom. The second floor includes a bedroom, a shower room and a large attic awaiting conversion.

The cider mill
Built of brick and flint, it has a slate roof with overhanging eaves. Inside, the concrete floor is completely smooth, thus making it easier to handle materials. All the equipment for making cider and calvados is on site and the current owner is prepared to pass on his knowledge to the new owners.

Our opinion

The presence of neighbouring cider mills makes it very clear that this property is situated in the heart of a traditional Normandy, one where the reality of experience immediately eliminates any idea of a picture post card.
The cliché has never deserved its pejorative sense quite so much as here: it is a matter of looking for, and discovering, what really matters behind the outward theatrical setting. The great simplicity of the place increases both interest and authenticity. It is worthy of note that this authenticity has not suffered from the appreciable convenience of its geographical situation. Discretion rules.
