15th century house in the Anjou region, land of King René
Location
285 km (178 miles) from Paris (240 / 150 of which are on motorway) and 7 km (4 miles) from Baugé, with all amenities, schools, doctors and shops. 40 minutes from Angers (French TGV train station, 90 minutes to Paris). In a village with 400 inhabitants.
Description
Surrounded by the Chandelais and Monnaie national forests, the village nestles in a small valley with a stream running through. In authentic, unspoilt countryside, very near to the former hunting grounds of good King René. In the centre of the village, with a 900 m² (0.22 acre) garden enclosed by a hedge, the property comprises a manor house and a small house.
The dwelling
Built in the 15th century from quarry stone, it features mullioned windows framed by moulded and sculpted freestone. The wrought facade is protected from rainwater by the long projecting slopes of the flat tile roof supported by sprockets.
There are many period features:
monumental fireplaces, a solid, spiral stairway, exposed beams, and a “potager” (hearth where meals were cooked on embers).
Spanning approx. 190 m² (2,045 sq ft), it comprises:
On the ground floor: an entrance hall, on the left, the wooden stairway that leads upstairs.
On the right, a living room, a kitchen and a bedroom. The residence is extremely luminous due to its small-paned windows and its double aspect rooms.
On the first floor: a landing, a bedroom with a fireplace, a bathroom and a toilet.
On the second floor: a large room with sloping ceilings.
A small, partly restored house adjoins the dwelling, and could be turned into a guest house.
