In the Poitou region,
14th & 15th century priory
In the region known as “Gâtine”, where the countryside alternates between thick hedges surrounding small meadows and woods predominantly planted with oak trees.
380 km (238 miles) south west of Paris and 45 minutes from Biard-Poitiers airport with its direct flights to London and other European capitals. Near to the medieval and tourist town of Parthenay which has all amenities and facilities.
Behind wrought iron gates in a 2,000 m² (0.5 acre) garden, the priory bears witness to its past use.
Directly adjacent to the hamlet’s church, its south facing surface area spans 340 m² (3,660 sq ft). Built in the 14th century and then extended in the 15th & 16th centuries, the building has several defensive features. A turret and a tower bear witness to a time when safety was dependent on such precautions.
The priory is currently composed of a rectangular, two-storey house with a round tower on the south west side.
Whilst exuding a medieval aura, the building has numerous windows of various sizes marking the different eras. The ogival entrance door leads into the hall, the lounge is to the left, the dining room to the right, a laundry room and a stone stairway to the rear. The kitchen has retained much character, certain modern-day features are incorporated in the 15th century fireplace. The dining room, illuminated by a mullioned window, has terracotta floor tiles and a small fireplace. The lounge, illuminated by two tall windows, has a fireplace and parquet flooring. To the rear, the spacious laundry room has kept its original stone floor which is in a good state of repair.
The first floor comprises a pleasant corridor on the north side that leads to 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The second floor includes two bedrooms and bathrooms as well as a large games room.
The round tower on the south west side does not communicate with the house. It features an independent flat with a kitchen, a lounge, two bedrooms and a converted attic room. The large fireplace in the lounge dates from the 15th century and the window has window seats.
A heated swimming pool has been installed in front of the house on the south side and a discreet cottage, used as an artist’s studio, is hidden in the thick bushes.
A superb spot for a family home or an ideal property to be used for a bed & breakfast activity. Its character and its history are still there and it would be possible and inexpensive to take down certain partition walls in order to regain the dimensions and the original layout of the priory. The authentic village is very quiet and the surroundings are totally unspoilt.
