In an ideal position for taking advantage of the Mont-Dore and Lioran ski resorts, experiencing the beneficial effects of thermal cures, hiking and exploring a superb cultural heritage, combining history and traditions. A little under 5 hours by road from Paris and Geneva; approx. 90 minutes from Clermont-Ferrand, Brive and Aurillac; all three have international airports.

Description

Perched on a rocky spur like a lookout post, this beautiful, 15th and 18th century property with French MH classification is a former feudal stronghold with origins dating from before the 13th century. An ideal position for appreciating an immense and sumptuous panorama showing nature at its best for as far as the eye can see.

The various sections are arranged around a courtyard, in the centre of which a cedar tree several hundreds of years old takes pride of place:
- an 18th century dwelling built over the former lowered keep, extended by a large, lower building, the ground floor of which has, amongst other things, a large reception room;
- two square corner towers flanking the former rampart containing a gateway;
- a second dwelling backing on to the defensive part;
- a very beautiful, 12th century Romanesque chapel;
- and finally, facing the entrance, at the top of the motte, the dominating ruins of a primitive castle.

The property forms a completely enclosed estate that spans 135 ha (333 acres) of grasslands and woods (mostly up to “big game” standards). There are also small stretches of water, sources and a vast bed of rushes. A little way away, several other totally independent buildings are dotted around the estate: two traditional houses, three wonderful barn-cowsheds, one of which is fitted out with horse loose boxes; a vast number of stalls to be used for horses.

Our opinion

Saved from the ravages of time by the experienced work of a couple of enthusiasts, this superb historic property proudly dominates a splendid region with its intoxicating landscapes from the top of its motte. Away from any kind of nuisance, this completely enclosed estate forms a totally unspoilt, healthy and protected setting. Its many assets will most certainly seduce lovers of wide open spaces, eagerly looking for tranquillity and wanting to continue the conservation work on an outstanding part of our heritage.
