In the Marais du Bessin area,
18th century mill

Location

In the Regional Natural Park of the Marais du Cotentin and Bessin, 15 km (9 miles) from Bayeux, its cathedral and its French SNCF station with 2 hour links to Paris-St-Lazare. Two minutes from the A13 motorway linking Cherbourg and Paris, passing by Caen which takes 35 minutes by car. 8 km (5 miles) from the sea and long sandy beaches.
The property is in a hamlet comprising 180 inhabitants and is less than 3 km (2 miles) from an administrative centre of a “canton” with all amenities.
The beautiful, wild countryside has a plant life that features reeds specific to fields crossed by streams, including, amongst others, the Aure-Inférieure. All kinds of migrating birds such as storks and herons pass through this region.

Description

The property comprises an 18th century mill and its outbuildings set in 4 ha (9.9 acres), with woods, meadows and a mill stream.

The mill stream crosses the property, flowing along and then under the mill, before continuing into a lush garden and the neighbouring marshlands.

These buildings built of pointed limestone with slate roofs are typical of the region.

The mill constitutes the main residence with a large living room incorporating a kitchen and containing the mechanical components of the mill, a lounge with a fireplace and a summer lounge as well as 4 bedrooms. The rooms are spread out over 3 floors and total approx. 215 m² (2,314 sq ft) of living space.

The “gîte de charme” holiday accommodation covers 3 floors with a kitchen-living room, a fireplace and 2 bedrooms; it spans approx. 82 m² of living space.

There is a barn as well as a “charreterie”, where carriages were once kept.

A flower-filled pleasure garden and a vegetable garden surround the mill and its outbuildings.

Our opinion

In recent history, the Normandy Landings could have had the most terrible consequences for this place. But, fortunately it was spared by the bombings and the entire surroundings were preserved, thus retaining its authenticity unchanged.
Both the surrounding countryside and the construction materials used for the buildings bestow on this property the charm that can always be recognised in places where, in and by his work, Man has given the best of himself. This mill was not only saved from the war but also from ordinary degradation, and now has the qualities that are expected from both a residence and a holiday haven: peace and quiet, beauty and simplicity.
Whether it is used for customers that are passing by or by a settled enthusiast of select places, the mill in its present state, with its old machinery, still exerts an unchanged, permanent attraction: the machine driven by nature.
The home comforts featured in the internal layouts appear to be the obvious embellishment essential to current day standards.
