A priory and its garden in the Nivernais area of Burgundy
In the Burgundy region, 2 hours from Paris by car, access via the A77, A6-E50 motorways, Nevers airport.
In a small town between Clamecy and Nevers, in a medieval village known for having been an important barony under the Dukes of Nevers.
The property comprises a former, 13th century priory that was rebuilt along the same lines between 1970 and 1976, an outbuilding in use as a garden shed, an enclosed garden and a small ruin at one end of the main dwelling.
The priory has one facade facing the street with two entrance doors including one with a few steps. A tower porch way, very probably from the 13th century, provides access to the inside of the property, opening on to an informal garden.
The main building has large windows overlooking the street and French windows opening on to the garden, giving superb luminosity to all the rooms: 4 bedrooms, two kitchens, two lounges; the property spans three stories, one of which is the attic.
The style of the interior decoration is sober, but bright without any rusticity. The walls are of plain, soft, pleasant colours. Wonderful exposed beams adorn certain ceilings; the floors which are covered with terracotta tiles or modern flooring are in perfect harmony with the interior decoration.
Near to Paris, this would make a lovely holiday home or an extremely comfortable, welcoming and functional house. This very peaceful setting is not far from a building with French Historic Monument classification. The small town in which the property is situated is quiet, with small, easily accessible shops.
The architectural assets of this residence are its carcass in pristine condition and its beautiful exposed stone. Works have been carried out since 2004, including the installation of natural gas-fired central heating, complete rewiring and full renovation of the bathroom and toilet facilities and plumbing. Sober interior decoration.
