A 12th century, listed church and its 15th century priory in the Poitou region
330 km (206 miles) from Paris, 320 (200) of which are on motorway, 15 km (9 miles) from Châtellerault station (the capital is 80 minutes away by French TGV train), 35 minutes from Poitiers, (airport with daily links to London), and 25 km (16 miles) from Futuroscope.
Between the Touraine region to the north, that of Brenne to the east and Poitou to the south, in unspoilt surroundings.
This gently undulating, lush green region is dotted with small medieval hamlets, forests and grasslands that are still surrounded by their hedges.
From its hillock, the priory dominates a small valley and a distant village.
This small estate measures a little more than 8,000 m² (2 acres) at the top of a peaceful hill. The garden is well kept, the informally arranged plants include several vertical, Mediterranean species such as the cypress, an umbrella pine and palm trees.
The buildings are positioned such that they receive light and the sun’s rays all throughout the day.
A modest church, built in the 12th century, consisting of a square chancel, a nave with two bays and a chapel opening on the south side. The main body measures 18X5 m (59X16.4 ft) and the chapel 4X4 m (13.1X13.1 ft).A Romanesque, semi-circular arched portal on the south side is flanked by two groups of small columns topped with plain bevelling.
The current owners have been carrying out quality restoration works for the last ten years in order to save the building from peril.
The priory
An extension was recently added to the 15th century construction, giving a final floor surface area of 215 m² (2,314 sq ft).
Ground floor: entrance hall, lounge, large living room, shower room and laundry room.
Upstairs: lounge, 4 bedrooms, workshop and shower room.
Numerous original features have been preserved and incorporated in a contemporary restoration. The noble and ecological materials that were used are in keeping with the old materials and harmoniously blend the two eras.
The north-west extension looks out on to the green lawns of the garden, visually extending the space.
Outbuildings
A second house awaiting restoration, a barn and a few small roofs for animals.
A rare property, with the historical aspect of the church intact, a successful blending of old and contemporary as regards the quality renovation works on the home. The proximity of transportation makes it an ideal site for weekends and holidays. The house awaiting restoration can but increase the potential of this property.
The unspoilt setting and the beauty of the views cannot be denied.
