16th & 18th century large luxurious home, 50 km (31 miles)
from Toulouse
This house is in a most auspicious natural, cultural and economic setting, in a small hamlet, less than two miles from a small town with all amenities, between the town of Castres, renowned for its economic development, and that of Toulouse, set in the heart of unspoilt countryside, harbouring an outstanding architectural heritage.
The house is imperiously built on a promontory, a vestige of the defensive construction it once was as part of the former moats currently bears witness. It took over new pleasure functions as of the 18th century with elegant landscaped parklands combined with large entrance gates, decoratively-shaped bushes and boxwood hedges, lime trees and other noble species were also planted around the dwelling. A neighbouring meadow completes the property.
Built in the 16th century as a Seigneurial dwelling, the house was completely redesigned at the end of the 18th century. In fact, it was after this period that the site lost its defensive function to take up one of pleasure in accordance with the fashion.
Thus, numerous windows were added to the wide facade over two stories, together with an invisible recessed top floor; this common 18th century practice aimed to soften the appearance of the buildings and conceal local tile roofs.
The dwelling and its outbuildings form a U-shape with the main entrances for both the house and the stables in the courtyard.
Following the style of the late 18th century, the room layout in the dwelling is centred around the entrance hall and the main wooden stairway which provides access to the landings that lead off to living areas or bedrooms.
Most of the rooms have kept their original features and decor.
The outbuildings, however, have been renovated and converted into living accommodation and, as far as the former stables are concerned, the restoration works have not altered their original appearance.
It is rare to find a property that has completely preserved its character. However, such is the case for this elegant house, steeped in quiet and charm which has been in no way damaged by its clever restoration works.
Pleasantly situated, deep in the countryside but not far from large towns, this property would be equally well suited to use as a family home as a profitable business activity.
