16th century house in the Aix region countryside

Location

Close to a historic Provencal village with all amenities, 30 minutes from Marseille airport and Aix TGV train station.

Description

Authentic traditional “bastide” house with a history-filled past. The oldest part dates from the 16th century and has a period ornamental lake (actually filled-in) with a lion head fountain. The house overlooks a large terrace with 2 one hundred year old plane trees.
Main house
Approx. 400 m² (4,305 sq ft) of living space which has been remarkably restored with great attention to detail to preserve the charm and the authenticity of the site. A spiral stairway, adorned with Saint Jacques de Compostella scallop shells leads upstairs.
Ground floor: 3 vaulted lounges, one of which has Saracen vaults and another has a large fireplace, vaulted dining room, kitchen with an “Aptesian-style” ceiling, toilet with sauna cabin, hammam and shower.
A vaulted wine cellar and a large sheepfold complete the property. 1st floor: a 2-bedroom suite with a study, fireplaces and trumeaux, a bathroom and a dressing room, as well as two other bedrooms, a linen room and a bathroom. The old windows have small panes and the floors are predominantly covered with old terracotta tiles. Very high ceilings. 2nd floor: 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.

Outbuildings
- a workshop, 2 storage rooms, 2 wood sheds, a covered area for 2 cars.
- In the rear part of the house are 2 wonderful, extremely large rooms (previously used as silkworm nurseries) which could be converted into independent dwellings.

Parklands: a little more than 1.1 ha (2.7 acres) surround the property, planted with one hundred year old plane trees, pine trees, cypress trees and an olive grove. An old ornamental lake, now filled-in, and its fountain add to the charm of the place. Other features include a counter-current swimming pool with an integrated Jacuzzi.

Our opinion

A superb geographical situation for this property tastefully restored with finesse in the Provencal tradition. Conversion potential still exists for the purchasers that are seduced by this building, which leaves no-one indifferent.
