Beach house with its mill
on an island
in the Vendée

Location

Direct beach access. 460 km (288 miles) from Paris, 75 km (47 miles) from Nantes Atlantique international airport with its London and Paris links.

Description

Set on a small hill with an unobstructed 180° view over the ocean, the property is protected from the turbulent tides whilst having direct access to one of the most beautiful beaches in the French department of Vendée.
The main house is extended by a series of buildings adjoining one another with a mill at the end. The guest house, stylishly built by the owner, includes a games room and a summer kitchen; it is in the vicinity of the swimming pool and the terrace for open-air meals. The entire property is protected by the natural coastline which cannot be built on.
Built in the 19th century by a rich family of millers from Nantes, the mill was part of a large estate. The property was recently renovated by its current owners who have cleverly added some extensions. The renovation and new construction works were carried out by a well-known architect.

A fig tree of impressive proportions which has produced its wonderful violet figs for more than a century stands near to the entrance ready to greet visitors. There is a choice of direction from the entrance hall, right for the lounge, straight on for the dining room and left for the kitchen with a second dining room. The main lounge features a whitened, exposed roofing framework and a Louis XV fireplace at one end of this large room. Picture windows open on to the ocean to the west and on to the countryside to the east. The small lounge leads into the small lounge of the mill tower. A robust stairway leads to two round bedrooms with views at all four compass points. An underground passageway has been created in order to compensate for the difference in levels of the rooms to the north. This passageway is designed as in a boat with mahogany-lined walls, copper lamps and a domed glass ceiling. At the end of the house, the master bedroom overlooks a private garden on a slightly lower level, carefully designed such that it can be admired from the bed.
A short way across the garden, the guest house has been built by the owner in perfect harmony with the mill. It includes two bedrooms, each with their own shower room, a games room in the middle and a summer kitchen for outdoor meals. The terrace and heated swimming pool are nearby.

Our opinion

This property is perfect for those who want to take advantage of life by the sea with the possibility of having a boat and going fishing right next to the house without having to carry out any works. The stylish renovation works mean that the new owners will simply have to unpack their bags and settle in before being able to appreciate the pleasures of the setting and the house.
Being the last house before the ocean, the land protected by the ONF, French National Forest Bureau, prevents any neighbouring constructions. The long clean beach and nature reserve that border it stretch for several miles, enabling long walks, swimming and fishing. A port, 10 minutes walk to the north is yet another asset on the list of qualities for this luxury beach house. It has everything to please the newcomers without any disadvantages. A house genuinely ready for immediate possession.
