A REMPLIR
On the outskirts of a small town with 4,000 inhabitants and all amenities, 60 km (38 miles) from Montpellier and not far from the A75, this castle stands in a lush valley marking the entrance to the Southern Cevennes region.
The castle is elegantly built in the middle of 5 ha (13.25 acres) of parklands (1 ha or 2.47 acres of which is fenced in) and combines views, large entrance gates, bridle paths, wide clearings and ornamental pools. The 18th century layout of this property was improved in the 19th century with the addition of the essential features of a landscape garden (various species of trees, bushes, etc.). It now gives a highly romantic view of the surroundings of such a residence.
The castle, built on much older foundations, demonstrates a regional architecture which is fairly representative of the 18th century. Spanning three stories which are accessed via a large entrance porch way that enhances the building, the uniform appearance of the layout repeatedly reveals architectural stratagems of complete use.
In fact, in order to dedicate part of the castle to silkworm nurseries, certain rooms that did not need light at this time were concealed in the facade by interesting trompe l’oeils which therefore do not endanger the precision of its layout.
The rear façade, however, has kept its original 16th century features by displaying a confusion of buildings and towers (including that of the spiral stairway). The older vaulted parts (monumental kitchen, cellars, sheep pens, etc.) are also accessed from this side.
The noble floor was transferred to the ground floor in the second half of the 18th century due to the proximity that this provides to the outside areas. It opens by means of a large semi-circular arched French window (another feature representative of proximity with the surrounding countryside) into a large entrance hall; a reception room that was designed without a fireplace so as just to give access to the different lounges and the chapel. The large lounge harbours some interesting canvasses clearly painted in the 18th century with subjects detailing the adventures of Don Quixote.
This floor also includes five bedrooms and the rooms assigned to the service quarters (kitchen, linen room, bathroom, etc.).
The first floor is accessed via a wide spiral stairway, similar to the initial 16th century construction. It comprises six bedrooms as well as vast areas, once devoted to silkworm nurseries, awaiting refurbishment.
The service quarters have been reused and a 100 m² (1,076 sq ft) flat has been installed there.
This property is set in an interesting economic environment in the heart of the Cevennes region, not far from main roads. Marked by the elegance of its 18th century architecture and its romantic inspirations from the 19th century, the property exudes a certain charm which is just waiting to be improved through quality restoration works.
