18th century property in the Bresse area 75 minutes from Geneva and Lyon

Location

Property situated near to Bourg-en-Bresse on the first foothills of the Jura mountains and on the outskirts of a pleasant village with local shops, primary and secondary schools. 15 minutes from a motorway access (A39 and A40), a TGV train station 20 minutes away (direct links to Geneva/Lyon/Paris) and 60 minutes from Lyon Satolas airport.

Description

The property is accessed via a long driveway through the forest, bordered by a building used as a farm that could become a caretakers’ cottage. In the distance, opposite the east courtyard bordered by an original building, once a bread oven, garages and barns, it is possible to see the Castle, a large luxurious home typical of the mid 18th century, probably redesigned and extended during the following century. More hidden in the vegetation, in partly wooded parklands of approx. 2.5 ha (6.2 acres) is a 15th century, medieval-looking tower and a vast building, previously used as a chapel.

The main building with approx. 550 m² (5,920 sq ft) of living space over two stories (excluding the attic which could be converted) is in pristine condition and was entirely refurbished ten or so years ago. Its internal layout is pleasant thanks to the large rooms and windows overlooking the parklands (small and large lounge, dining room, study, large kitchen, 7 bedrooms).
On a lower level and as an extension of the wonderful cellars and storerooms, an orangery with brick vaults is used as a large lounge in the summer as it opens directly on to the swimming pool.

Each of the individual, original outbuildings has its own style, marking the constant architectural changes made to the property. Contrasting with the very 19th century dovecote and bread oven, is an impressive square tower built in 1479, witness to a medieval past during which the estate was very probably a Seigneury given its dominant position over the village.

Our opinion

A reasonably-sized castle in a very peaceful setting, converted so that it can be lived in on a daily basis or be used as a holiday home. It is tastefully decorated and has large outbuildings that add to its charm. Its proximity to the village with its schools and its shops is an undeniable advantage. It has an unobstructed view over the Saône plains and there is the possibility of acquiring an additional 3 hectares (7.4 acres) that adjoin the property.
