Territory uniting the administrative regions of Rhône-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Languedoc Roussillon.
Rhône-Alpes stretches from the Massif Central in the west to the Alps in the east and from the glaciers in the north-east to the lavender in the south. The common denominator between the different territories making up the region is the Rhone. The “King of Rivers” borders or crosses through the eight departments of the region which, in turn contains the largest stretches of fresh water in France.
Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur is situated on the Mediterranean coastline. The grassland and forest-covered slopes of the Southern Alps drain into the large ravine of the Durance. Verdon Canyon opens a prestigious gully in the rocky lavender-perfumed plateaux of Upper Provence. The Rhone plain is conducive to the growing of early fruit and vegetables. The natural heritage is outstanding: 3 national parks, 4 regional natural parks, nature reserves. The same can be said for its cultural heritage: 1,800 buildings which are listed or classified as historic monuments, and a great number of festivals, many of which are world famous.
Languedoc-Roussillon is bordered to the south by Spain, Andorra and the Mediterranean Sea and the following French regions: Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Rhône-Alpes, Auvergne and Midi-Pyrénées. It is limited by several natural features: the Pyrenees, then the Naurouze Sill, the Cevennes and the Rhone River. Certain geographers talk about an amphitheatre facing the sea when speaking about the mountains and plains in the Languedoc and Roussillon areas. Lower Languedoc has the most vineyards in the world. To nature’s attractions can be added those of the many towns of art, history-filled castles and famous abbeys.
