Poitou-Charentes the inlands resemble a region of transition with very varied features, going from plains to countryside with small fields and hedges to marshlands. The coast and the islands exert their tourist attraction and account for half of the country’s oyster production. More than 90% of the cognac produced is exported.

Aquitaine includes five departments: Dordogne, Gironde, Landes, Lot-et-Garonne and Pyrénées-Atlantiques. The vast Aquitaine basin has considerable resources. The immense pine forest of the Landes (1,000,000 ha or 2,471,000 acres) borders the entire “Côte d’Argent” (the Atlantic Coast between the Gironde and the Bidassoa estuaries) dotted with seaside resorts, and supplies a large wood and paper industry. Bordeaux wines are currently the ambassadors for the region.

Midi-Pyrénées unites eight departments: Ariège, Aveyron, Haute-Garonne, Hautes-Pyrénées, Gers, Lot, Tarn and Tarn-et-Garonne. The Garonne valley forms a vast communications corridor connecting the Aquitaine to the Languedoc. The Causses as well as the Central Pyrenees are riddled with sinkholes which attract tourists and speleologists. The thermal spas of Bigorre are close to the ski areas. Toulouse, town of art and the main market in an agricultural region, is not only a university town but also a centre of science and technology.
