Large, Cru Bourgeois vineyard in the Medoc region

Location

The property is situated on the outskirts of a town in the Medoc region, 35 km (22 miles) from Bordeaux, its airport and French TGV train station. Its position is a little way from the Gironde estuary which protects it from humidity and fog. The region benefits from a special micro-climate that is particularly favourable for the vineyard and the appellation. Its outstanding “terroir” unites the most prestigious of Bordeaux’s Grands Crus Classés as well as numerous Crus Bourgeois. Regional tourism is good because of the chateaux with their interesting, sometimes unusual, architecture and the wine tasting.

Description

The property extends over 35 ha (86.5 acres), of which 19ha (47 acres) have productive vines, 11ha (27acres) are woods, grasslands and uncultivated land, to which is added the wine storehouses, the agricultural buildings and the large luxurious house.
Once a hunting lodge, this property was built in the 17th century. It apparently belonged to the nephew of the Cardinal of Richelieu and Governor of Guyenne and Gascogne. The hunting lodge burnt down; all that remained were thick walls on which the more recent constructions were based.
The wine storehouse : This is an old-fashioned, extremely vast, wine storehouse, built at the end of the 19th century: approx. 1,000 m² (10,764 sq ft), with wine vats, a high-up window and a superb facade with red, oak wood shutters. There are several rooms inside the wine storehouse: one has stainless steel and steel vats, another has concrete and steel vats and the last one has concrete vats. This is followed by the barrel cellar, at the end is a former grape-pickers’ kitchen, then a workshop, a laboratory and a store for phytosanitary products. This unit, in the middle of the woods and vines, constitutes a model, efficient and high-performance work instrument for making wine. Another building, a former house awaiting renovation, is opposite the wine storehouse separated by a courtyard. In the courtyard is a well connected to a vat as well as an attractive weeping willow.
The barns : Away from the wine storehouses and the large luxurious house, in the middle of a plot amongst the vines and the woods are several constructions that form a vast courtyard. The large luxurious house is accessed via a long dirt track, a small bridge crossing a stream and entrance gates. This 19th century style house with its wonderful stone facade spans a ground floor and an upstairs to give approx. 320 m² (3,444 sq ft) of living space. The ground floor comprises an entrance hall with a stairway leading upstairs, followed by a wide corridor to the garden, constituting a second entrance. To the right a living room of approx. 23 m² (248 sq ft); to the left, a 22 m² (238 sq ft) kitchen. At the end, on either side of the corridor, are a 32 m² (344 sq ft) lounge and a 39 m² (420 sq ft) lounge with windows overlooking the parklands; vast rooms currently used as offices. Upstairs is a landing with a high, decorated ceiling that leads to three large bedrooms, a vast bathroom and a linen room. The house is in pristine condition and well renovated. The garden has some superb trees. Another house awaiting renovation adjoins the main house. The “terroir” and the vineyard: Appellation Medoc Cru Bourgeois Production : 2008 : 93,000 bottles; 2009: 134,362 bottles; 2010 : 101,233 bottles.
Hand picking.
Wine-making : According to the best tradition, the wines are kept for about 18 months in new oak wood casks that are selected and renewed for every harvest.
The wine : The Chateau produces generous wines, with full-bodied, concentrated tannins that linger in the palate; it is an engaging wine that is more and more sought-after by connoisseurs the world over. This wine was introduced to the French Court and cured Louis XV; at the time this precious nectar was dubbed "Richelieu’s medicinal tea".

Our opinion

This vineyard is characterised by the quality of the land and its notoriety, by the excellence of the vineyard that benefits from particularly discerning care, on the one hand in pure local tradition and on the other by using new wine-making techniques. Its commercial value is guaranteed. The chateau also has a prestigious past in the world’s wine showcase. This is indeed a rare product.
