An unusual villa facing the sea
on the Emerald Coast


In Sables-d'Or-les-Pins, in the French department of Côtes-d'Armor. A seaside resort on the Emerald Coast, it stands on a dune ridge that stretches along a three kilometre long arc. Designed at the beginning of the last century, it constitutes an example, rare for the time, of an overall project aiming to integrate landscape and architecture issues from the beginning. It was developed on either side of a wide avenue leading to the sea. Apart from its hotels, shops and leisure facilities (casino, golf course, tennis courts, etc.), all other shops and amenities are less than 10 km away. This resort is located between other outstanding sites such as La-Latte Castle, Cape Fréhel and Cape Erquy.


The resort, to the west and the east of the main road leading to the sea, is organised according to two star-shaped areas which define a total of 300 plots. The east section was relatively rigorously landscaped due to the flat topography, whilst that situated to the west which contains the villa was less so due to its undulating character. The history of the house is closely linked to architect Pol-Abraham who designed not only numerous villas in the region but also a good number of public and private buildings in Paris, Orleans, etc. It was, in actual fact, his daughter who had the villa built in the 1970’s on an undulating plot spanning 1,688 m²; the garage and a garden shed were added at a later date.

The house

This house has just been completely revamped by its current owner, a lower of beautiful things, with the aid of a talented set designer. Built on a raft foundation, its four concrete pillars support four floors, each of a different design. An allusion to the cards that Pol-Abraham skilfully played at the nearby casino, the top floor is heart-shaped, those underneath respectively taking the shapes of a club, a diamond and a spade. Each floor spans approx. 60 m² and is characterised by the lack of any partitioning. The dwelling is entirely surrounded by picture windows which provide luminous clarity and a magnificent 360° view over the sea. The rest of the facades feature exotic wood cladding (shingle). A balcony corridor goes almost all the way around the tower on the top floor.

Garden level
This level comprises a self-contained flat comprising a living room with a kitchen area and a bedroom with a shower area as well as a study and a toilet down a few steps. The garage is adjoining but not communicating.
Ground floor
A walkway above the garage leads to a lounge, an open-plan kitchen and a dining area.

Our opinion

Daughterly love and visionary daring are combined here in one unusual property which, in its own way, reshuffles traditional architecture plans. Without even mentioning the clever design of the floors, the house is full of ingenious features such as those that let in copious amounts of light whilst providing an unobstructed view over the surroundings. The use of a wooden cladding, which was rare at the time for a coastal building, further reinforces the villa’s originality. The major asset, its balcony corridor, will give its new owners the feeling of having become lighthouse keepers, or even captain of a liner that is especially reliable as it is solidly anchored to land.
