A contemporary home, awarded an architectural prize,
on the edge of the forest near to Fontainebleau

, SEINE-ET-MARNE ile-de-france FR
Île-de-France

Location

70 km from Paris, 15 km from Fontainebleau and 5 km from a town with all shops and schools.
This property stands on the edge of a forest, with a panoramic and totally unobstructed view over the pastoral countryside.

Description

A no-through road makes its way through the forest before reaching the property.
The outside facade of this Nordic-looking, T-shaped house, with its voluntarily austere appearance, is soberly built of brick.
The inside, however, is the complete opposite with a magnificent combination of glass walls and warm wood.
This architectural work of art was created as part of an original construction project set in natural fragile surroundings.
Having fallen in love with the site, the commissioner turned to his brother, an internationally renowned architect living in the Unites States.
Like a dozen other surrounding villas, the construction had to blend into a natural, fragile wooded estate and meet the constraints of the project specifications set in line with a “landscape charter”.
To do this, the architect followed the wooden framework construction techniques used across the Atlantic that he enhanced with the know-how of local craftsmen.
The roof is composed of a roofing framework comprising layers of wood covered with wood shingles associated with copper elements.
The wide overhanging eaves protect the vast glazed windows that provide maximum illumination on the inside.
The solid sections of the facades are made of brick or red cedar cladding.
The property also includes a wooden chalet and a vast wooden farm shed that cannot be seen from the house.

The designer house

The entire building is virtually all on a level, apart from the cellar.
The horizontal bar of the “T” formed by the house is separated into two sections by the remote-controlled iron entrance gates.
The right-hand section of this half-bar corresponds to annex buildings: a workshop, a covered, 3-car, open garage, a small indoor swimming pool with a counter-current feature, a shower area and a toilet. In the left-hand side is the main house, the only section to span two levels.
The vertical bar of the “T” comprises a flat which is all on a level and totally independent although it communicates with the main house. This can be used as accommodation for welcoming family and friends or even as a holiday rental unit.

Cellar
The cellars span a floor surface area of approx. 127 m².
Ground floor
1) Main house (left-hand side of the horizontal bar):
Courtesy of a totally secure system of sliding picture windows, this entire section of the building appears to open on to the natural surroundings, the walls folding away as if by magic.
The communal entrance is shared by both dwellings that could be reunited or remain separate.
Then comes a study, a toilet, a linen room, a vast kitchen forming an open space with the dining room and the lounge which continue all as one.
The two areas can be divided by a discreet folding partition.
The monumental fireplace is in good working order.
This area is characterised by a blending of wood and glass that makes light omnipresent, even in the depths of winter.

2) Second dwelling (vertical bar):
The communal entrance room opens into a vast open space which has a kitchen at the end.
This section set at right-angles to the main house comprises 2 bedrooms, all on a level, a shower room and a toilet.
The view is enchanting, the two dwellings defining a space that looks widely out over the plain with a bell-tower in the distance.

First floor
This level, only in the main house, comprises two bedrooms, a shower room with a toilet, a dressing room and a hall area.
Outbuilding
This section, standing on the right-hand side of the gates in the horizontal bar of the “T”, includes a workshop, a covered, 3-car, open garage as well as the covered swimming pool.
Cottage
This wooden chalet was designed for children.
Open barn
This wooden construction spans approx. 60 m².

Our opinion

Even the great Frank Lloyd Wright would probably not have rejected this house, the profoundly organic architecture of which manages to directly link Man with the nature that abounds in the immediate vicinity, forming an exceptional site. The property appears to come from a perfect equation uniting the principles of Nordic ecology with a luminous purity of lines. Hence, this contemporary architecture prize that rewards a carefully developed dwelling where residents instinctively feel at home, in perfect harmony with the outside elements. These include the famous sandstone rocks of Fontainebleau Forest, including the nearby “Dame-Jouanne-et-l'Eléphant”, that attract rock-climbing enthusiasts from all over the world.
This property is both unique and rare.
