A contemporary residence, steeped in light,
with a lake and the Vosges Forest on the horizon

In the Vosges mountains, an hour by car from historic villages in the Alsace vineyards. Luxembourg and Belgium are but 230 km away and Germany, some 100 km away, is even nearer; Paris is 425 km away via the A5 motorway, Lyon is less than 390 km away. This area is 145 minutes away from the French capital via TGV train direct from Saint-Dié-des-Vosges station.
This south-facing house is built on the heights of a small tourist town standing at the end of a mountain lake, created by the retreat of a glacier more than 10,000 years ago. The forest is in the background and the small town stretches out below. One of the region’s biggest ski resorts, visible from the house, can be reached in less than fifteen minutes.

This virtually brand new, contemporary style house is characterised by its long silhouette which is very low in relation to the sloping ground, such that it does not stand out from its surroundings. Wide, south-facing picture windows look out over the lake and the forest. The interior was designed with spaciousness, ease of movement and light in mind: copious amounts of light flood in, illuminating and heating all the rooms even in winter. In addition to the quality of its construction and its amazing modern-day home comforts, this residence is in pristine condition. A large, sloping meadow surrounds the residence; a fresh water spring flows past below.

The house

This house has two floors. The vast first level is laid out all on a level with the garden whilst the smaller upper floor is extended via a terrace spanning the rest of the floor surface area of the lower level.

Ground floor
The entrance door, set in the north facade, opens into a vestibule providing direct access to a lounge-dining room as well as a kitchen, and, on the left-hand side, to the bedrooms via a corridor. The lounge and the dining room form a vast floor surface area, separated along half of their length by a simple partition. The south-facing lounge is illuminated by the slightest ray of sunshine; set back, the dining room nevertheless has wide openings ensuring good luminosity, enhanced by a large, west-facing picture window. The very large kitchen opens via a French window on to an outside terrace, made of grey-tinted wood and protected by the protruding terrace above. Both vast bedrooms face south and the lake water in its forest setting. One of them has a French window opening on to the outside.
Second level
This level is predominantly taken up by a wonderful, large bedroom, steeped in light via a small window and a large, south-facing French window opening on to the terrace and the lake. This room adjoins an equally large bathroom which also faces south.
The garden
The grounds, currently grasslands, slope gently down from the little road which constitutes its upper boundary up to the edge of another property, constructed in a fold of the land below the house.

Our opinion

This extremely contemporary residence blends cleverly with the lie of the land and, with its refined lines setting it apart from all other surrounding constructions, this property is truly an architectural success. In a land where seasons greatly differ, its predominantly south-facing aspect guarantees outstanding luminosity and an especially warm atmosphere, even on the coldest of winter days. The vast grounds, carpeted with daffodils in the springtime, have retained the natural appearance of grasslands. Superbly located by the side of a lake with the forest and tall fir trees as a backdrop, this residence is also near to a resort which, with its lake and its wonderful ski slopes, provides leisure activities summer and winter alike.
