100 km to the south of Paris, north of Sens. Just 5 minutes from a slip road on to the A5 motorway. 15 km from a train station with 50-minute links to Paris-Bercy.
On the outskirts of a village with 560 inhabitants, in pleasant, undulating surroundings.

Description

On the edge of the village, the little road leading to neighbouring houses is bordered by an impressive, evergreen hedge, behind a low sandstone wall. Once through wrought iron gates flanked by two sandstone pillars, topped with elegant capitals, a 13th century tower and its loopholes come into view.
The main building adjoining the tower is extended by a barn. Said building is the west facade of the old medieval castle which was divided into 2 properties at the beginning of the 20th century.
A leisure garden is to be found on the left-hand side, behind another lower sandstone wall.
This property exudes great architectural unity which is enhanced by the roofs covered in small, regional tiles. The framing around the windows, created during the Renaissance period, as well as the buttresses of the medieval castle’s old defensive door are made of dressed sandstone. The exposed stone walls have a much rougher finish.

The manor house

This is a rectangular building. At the far, left-hand end of the facade, a robust round tower with a pointed roof conceals a wing set at right angles. A central square tower, spanning three levels and reinforced by buttresses, is topped with a hip roof featuring a shed dormer. On its left, a 2-storey building has a hanging roof dormer. On its right is a higher section with a level illuminated via a shed dormer.


Ground floor
The porch way in the centre of the building features double carriage doors, opening on to recent parquet flooring, exposed stone walls and exposed oak wood ceiling beams. On the right-hand side is a stairway, followed by a boiler room and a garage. A kitchen, on the left-hand side, opens into a dining room, adorned with an impressive stone fireplace, and into a games room which can also be reached from the outside. Floors are covered with terracotta tiles or parquet flooring. The single-glazed windows feature small-panes and indoor shutters. In a corner of the room, a passageway provides access to the tower; an ideal place for installing a wine cellar.
First floor
The spiral oak wood stairway leads directly, on the right-hand side, to a dining room with its 19th century, carved wood fireplace. The white-painted, French ceiling reflects the light and the parquet flooring is laid in a herringbone pattern. The adjoining kitchen has terracotta floor tiles as well as a door opening on to a west-facing terrace.
On the left-hand side of the stairway, a slightly raised library features a fireplace. A few steps, on the left of this room, lead to a corridor providing access to three bedrooms and two bathrooms with toilets, one of which is generously decorated with Delft ceramic tiles.

Second floor
The stairway leads to a large landing, laid out under the roofing framework, to a bathroom with a toilet and to a bedroom with its exposed roofing framework painted white. The floors are covered with terracotta tiles or parquet flooring. Another bedroom, at the other end, has terracotta floor tiles and a small, 19th century, marble fireplace.

The barn

The barn extends the main building. Spanning a single lowered level, it is accessed via two carriage doors.

Our opinion

The medieval origins of this residence provide an austere simplicity which has been perfectly enhanced by the previous residents. The setting is superb and the leisure garden is well worthy of its name. The interior exudes authenticity from all of its rooms. Some decorative features are outstanding to the point that they alone would justify some form of a hotel and catering activity. It would also make an extremely pleasant family residence or, given its location, a holiday home that could be visited frequently.
