The village of Barbizon, some 50 km away from the French capital with a slip road leading directly on to the A6 motorway, is known the world over for having formed the background in the painting “L'Angélus” (The Angelus) by Jean-François-Millet whose artist’s studio can still be visited today. Barbizon was a place of inspiration and work for many artists, poets and landscape painters who, at the end of the 19th century, used the local countryside or Fontainebleau forest for their plein-air painting. The famous “Barbizon School” was founded.
The main street, forming the backbone of the village, is lined with local shops, galleries, boutiques and several good restaurants where it is pleasant to eat.
This large, rectangular, neo-Norman style building dates from the early 20th century. Typical of regional constructions at this time, its facade features dressed stone on the first level and half-timbering on the second. A central projection marks the main covered entrance. The rear, with two protruding ends linked via a large neo-gothic style glazed gallery running the full width of the ground floor, is U-shaped.
This residence, spanning approx. 800 m² of living space, was constructed and decorated using quality materials, such as herringbone pattern parquet flooring, marble stone floors, old floor tiles, sandblasted beams and panelling, marble and granite.
The caretaker’s cottage
The caretaker’s cottage stands at a distance from the main house and has its own garden. A small building nearby is used as a DIY workshop and a woodshed.
The swimming pool
The rectangular swimming pool is covered with an atrium which means that it can be used all year round and that it can be widely opened into the garden during clement weather. This area also includes a bar, a Jacuzzi, a hammam, a shower and a toilet. The basement houses a boiler room and the filtration system. The installation has all the latest cutting-edge technological features.
Never has the Anglo-Norman style been such an apt description. The half-timbering is indeed that of the French province. And the abundance of neo-gothic features, with monumental fireplaces, a large stairway and the design of the stained glass windows in the interior gallery, appear to come from straight across the Channel. To complete the picture, the village, in which this large property is lucky to be, has the same name as one of the most famous movements of 19th century French painting: the “Barbizon School”. On the outskirts of the immense Fontainebleau forest, the landscape is still as beautiful as it was at the time of Millet, Daubigny and Théodore-Rousseau. This recently fully restored residence appears to be more than worthy of such a heritage.
