Location

70 minutes from Marignane airport and 40 minutes from that of Toulon-Hyères, 20 minutes from Toulon TGV train station, 25 minutes from Sanary and an hour from Marseille. Near to the unspoilt district of Tamaris, an old seaside resort that was very fashionable at the beginning of the 20th century. The shuttle boat to Toulon is but a 10-minute walk away, making it equally possible to go to the market, the opera and the train station. The sandy beach and the shops are only 5 minutes away. A wicket gate at the end of the garden opens on to the rocks for taking a dip.

Description

This south-east facing house was constructed on the coast in the 1920’s. Spanning approx. 220 m² of living space, it looks down through majestic pine trees on to the sea, giving a feeling of enchantment. The facade features straight and arched openings, a triple overhanging cornice and three vertical rows of stone quoins. Three terraces, on grounds surrounding the house and spanning approx. 1,400 m², provide views over the landscape: one, paved with terracotta tiles and laid out in front of the reception rooms, is reached via two flights of stone steps, another large gravel terrace is bordered by pine trees and balusters, whilst the smaller third and last one, also surrounded by balusters, resembles a belvedere overlooking the water, is. A small boathouse is near to the water. A caretaker’s house stands next to the main house.

The house

The incline of the sloping grounds naturally creates two levels. The entrance is on the west side, on a level with the bedrooms. The main rooms can be reached from the inside via a stairway, or via the outside by going around the house.


Ground floor
The main entrance hall, with its heavy old door, leads to the floor housing the bedrooms, laid with parquet flooring. Three bedrooms have a sea view; a master bedroom, with a bathroom, another bedroom with its own bathroom and a single bedroom. On the west side is a small bedroom with a shower room.
Garden level
A stairway goes down from the entrance hall to the living rooms, with old terracotta floor tiles and old wooden doors. A kitchen, a dining room, a lounge with three French windows and a study open on to a terrace paved with terracotta tiles. A games room and a back kitchen complete this level. The boiler room is separate.
Caretaker’s accommodation
This small, detached 45 m² house comprises a kitchen and a living room on the ground floor. Upstairs are two bedrooms, with sloping ceilings, and a bathroom.

Our opinion

A very good geographical location, sheltered from the mistral wind, in the peace and quiet with everything within walking distance: shops, beaches and restaurants, including one with a star. The still authentic village near to Saint-Mandrier and the proximity of the renowned seaside resort of Sanary are unquestionable assets. The caretaker’s cottage could possibly be rented out. The grounds, protected by tall pine trees, where it would be possible to install a swimming pool, and the house await new owners who will restore their splendour of yesteryear.
