To the border “on skis”,
a springboard from France into Switzerland
Rousses, JURA franche-comte 39220 FR

Location

Forty five minutes from Geneva and its international airport, thirty minutes from a TGV train station linking it to Paris in three hours, a few kilometres from the watchmaking manufacturers in the Joux valley in Switzerland, in the dynamic French-Swiss ski resort of “Les Rousses”.

Description

The house does not stand out at first glance as it lies embedded in a flower meadow on the edge of the Risoux forest. Unobtrusive, thanks to its transparent glass sliding doors, its curved concrete and metal clad lines, it emerges from the mountains.
A path slightly below the property is used to access the house.
Its two storeys are shaped like overlapping waves, each with its own grass-covered roof terrace.
This beautiful contemporary house is the work of the architect Julien de Smedt, who as lovers of contemporary architecture will know, designed the Holmenkollen Ski Jump in Oslo, Norway.

The house of the architect Julien de Smedt

The symbolic architecture of this house calling to mind a ski jump, with its two overlapping grass-covered terraces built on a level with the sloping ground and merging with the landscape.
The house’s simple silhouette nestled between mountains and meadows is ideally exposed to the sun and shielded from the north wind.
Inside, Julien de Smedt’s interest in ergonomics is reflected in the perfect easy access to all of its rooms and the attention to details magnify the comfort of this house.

Ground floor
The ground floor is devoted to rest and relaxation. It is occupied by three bedrooms, two of which have double beds. In the third, two bunk beds have been effectively and artistically designed, sailor-style bunks, by a local carpenter. Two bathrooms with their Italian-style shower, one with a toilet as well as a separate toilet, a large walk-in wardrobe, a cloakroom and a cellar, an outdoor cupboard for skis.
First floor
The first floor comprises a large open space, with a finely crafted American kitchen in the corner with a central island and a large sitting room opening onto a vast sunny terrace overlooking the Orbe Valley. From the second terrace, there is a view on the Risoux mountain range.
Terrace
The highlight of this house, its grass-covered roof terrace, reached via some metal steps embedded in the mountains, is a garden by itself.
It is interesting to reflect on the architect’s thoughts about the Oslo Ski Jump that I cite here “Conceptually, the project involved working with three depths of field: the distant, the close (at the foot of the slope) and the outward view.” Here too, we are happy to find the visually striking display of these three visual fields.

Our opinion

Here, the mountains offer the occupants of the house their best while sparing them the harshness of such a landscape. Living in this light-flooded house offers its occupants the pleasure of a succession of timeless moments, such as the feeling of warmth while being surrounded by snow, the encounter with wild goats who come and press their muzzle against the windows, the pleasure to be able to set off for a stroll on foot, by ski, by bike in any season, contemplating the stars after dark on the walk-on roof. Having the opportunity to live in complete harmony with nature is rare today, even rarer still, without constraints, such is the case here, thanks to its proximity to a full range of modern services and the Swiss watchmaking industry close by.
