A little lane on the heights of the north bank of the river Loire, facing Amboise chateau, leads to a gateway. The land, stretching from north to south, is wooded on the east side and a thick hedge separates it from the neighbouring property on the west side. The land slopes gently down, ending in a point also bordered by a wood. This peaceful, verdant site has a view looking down over the valley. An outbuilding, just inside the gates, includes a 33 m² study and an 18 m² garage. A gravel driveway leads to a square courtyard, bordered by decoratively trimmed hornbeam hedges, where a chestnut tree takes pride of place, rising above the others. The main entrance to the house is reached from this square. The drive, going around the east side of the house, goes alongside a veranda and a shady terrace. And lastly, on the south side looking out over the valley, the facade of the house is enhanced by climbing roses and the swimming pool is edged with a low stone wall, covered in flowers, all extended by a green lawn, dotted at the end with several fruit trees.

The house

This traditional, construction has a rectangular base. It comprises a partial basement and two floors. The main entrance on the north facade opens on to a mezzanine, the ground floor being down half a floor. Both main facades are enhanced with a central, slightly curved projection, featuring stripes and wide glazed windows, with rigorously square panes. The roof has two slopes in the central section of the building and is covered with slate; the pavilions on the east and west sides have terrace roofs.

Ground floor
The atrium, forming the centre of the house, is open on two levels. This one is laid out as a lounge with a fireplace. The west pavilion comprises two bedrooms, a shower room and a toilet, whilst the east pavilion includes a dining room and a kitchen, both opening on to the veranda and the terrace.
First floor
On the east side is a large bedroom with a bathroom and toilet. The west side houses two bedrooms and a shower room with a toilet.

Our opinion

The site and the view are but invitations to take flight, just as Leonard may have imagined for testing his flying machine. The architect, also a great observer of nature, created this original and unique house in his search to use and control space and light; both in perfect harmony one with the other.
