Description

This building stands, with its asymmetric facades, around a bend in the road in the midst of a small village, with 260 inhabitants, not far from the Vexin region. It is set behind tall gates that bear the heraldic trefoil of the old owners. The chateau facade is preceded by a main courtyard. An old ice-cave near the chateau is housed in a pavilion.
Large outbuildings, spanning two levels, are laid out at the end of an attractive, tree-lined alleyway on the right-hand side of the residence.
History recounts that the lands stretching for as far as the eye can see was all part of the property.

The 18th century chateau

This majestic building, spanning a floor surface area of 700 m², is a former coaching inn. Reconstructed in the 18th century to become a manor house, it was further redesigned over the years. A central rectangular building forms a U-shape with two wings, on one side, and two pavilions, on the other. All the roofs are covered with slate.
The orangey-coloured brick facades, with white cement belt and string courses, feature numerous through openings, some of which are protected by wooden shutters.
The slightly arched ground floor windows are adorned with a keystone featuring a white cement coat-of-arms. The double doors opening into the entrance hall are glazed. The porch, with its six low steps, is topped with a triangular pediment, adorned with a central oculus which enhances the alignment of the facade with the parklands.
The lower sections are constructed from Vernon stone. The slate hip roofs feature chimney stacks.
The reconstruction of the chateau was carried out under the aegis of the architect Couture who has several regional chateaux to his credit.

Ground floor
Elegance and refinement are to be seen everywhere.
The through nature of the rooms makes them particularly bright.
On the right-hand side of the entrance hall are a dining room, a kitchen and its little dining room, a laundry room, a storeroom, a room, a workshop, a toilet and a stairway leading to the upper floors.
On the left-hand side are a large lounge, a bedroom, a billiards’ room, a smoking room and a chapel.
Louis XV style panelling covers the walls in the large lounge.
The same can be said for the neo-classical style chapel. The figure of Saint-Antony was painted on the ceiling by a grand master of the 19th century. The stucco pilasters date from the 18th century.
The floors on the ground floor are covered with tiles featuring inlaid decoration or oak wood, randomly-matched parquet flooring.
The rooms are enhanced with moulded ceilings and fireplaces, some of which have trumeaux. Some of the rooms have panelling.
The main, left-turning stairway, with terracotta tile steps and wooden nosing, has wrought iron railings with a wooden handrail.

First floor
A gallery on the same side as the main facade is greatly illuminated via wide openings. It provides access to seven bedrooms, four shower rooms, a bathroom, a dressing room, a small lounge, a library and a separate toilet.
The floors are covered with old hexagonal terracotta tiles, oak wood parquet flooring or carpet. Slatted shutters protect the bedroom windows. There are cupboards in every room.

Attic
This area is taken up by an attic, two bedrooms and a bathroom.

The outbuildings and the dwelling

These buildings, also laid out in a U-shape, span a floor surface area of 500 m². They were constructed with the same materials as those used for the chateau.
The former staff dwelling, spanning two levels, comprises three bedrooms and awaits restoration. It is flanked by outbuildings composed of horse loose boxes, workshops and garages as well as a large rainwater recovery tank. The old arched openings, now redesigned, once provided access to horse-drawn carriages.

Our opinion

This chateau has undeniably made the regularity of its design the mark of its nobility. A peaceful horizontality, carrying the day, extends the arms of the two wings on one side and reflects the same motif via two pavilions on the other. The large, 18th century openings are quietly aligned like drilling soldiers. The white of the profile and outline contrasts with the red brick background. The inside still has much of its panelling and moulding as well as many of its old floors. The U-shape of the outbuildings, which include a dwelling, is reminiscent of that of the main building. Living in such beautiful premises is an enviable prospect which could be enhanced with some kind of a hotel and catering activity, provided that the peace and quiet of the residence is respected.
