Senlis, OISE picardy 60300 FR

This secluded refuge, perched high on a wooded promontory dominating a romantic valley, is undisturbed and far from everything due to its surroundings yet close to a full range of amenities in the lively town of Crépy-en-Valois, 4 km away, and Paris 70 km away.
In Gérard de Nerval country (19th century French writer), with its authentic country churches, villages dotted along the beautiful luxuriant valley, a region where the landscapes are magical.
A path runs up between the small town hall and a 12th century church, after the last houses in the village and disappears into the forest. It leads to the house situated at the end of a long driveway.

Standing with one’s back to the main facade of this old hunting lodge, one can see the village below. The view is enchanting both in the winter with its bare trees and in summer when the trees are leaf-laden.
The property spans three hectares and is embedded in the forest with wide scenic views thanks to its paths and tracks.
A grass terrace protected by a wrought iron balustrade looks out on to the valley.

The hunting lodge on a promontory

The building, a hunting lodge dating back to the end of 19th century, was gradually improved and extended.
Designed like a stage setting, there is a visible side, the main facade and another side that isn’t meant to be seen. A projection stands out in the centre of the facade, on the valley-facing side. It is topped with a hip and sprocket roof covered with flat tiles. The lower section of the facade is brick and the upper section painted to imitate half-timbering. Decorative features such as imitation balconies bring to mind the Art-Deco rather than Art-Nouveau style without disrupting the aesthetic balance of the ensemble.
The other facade, the one facing the forest, is not decorated, it is entirely rendered.

Ground floor
The entrance is via the projection up a few steps. A glass front door opens straight into the sitting room. The room is octagonal and has a brick fireplace. Then, there is a dining room. This is the main living area facing the grass terrace. The original materials give the property its own particular old-fashioned charm: polished pinewood parquet flooring and red and white cement floor tiles and wainscoting. As well as these living rooms, there is a kitchen, a study with two windows, and a games room, which could be used as a bedroom with a shower room. Everything is in its original condition. Some work will be needed.
First floor
On the upper floor, there are five bedrooms one of which has a small balcony; ideal for a large family or hosting friends. Some rooms have views over the valley and further away over the plains. Everything is in good condition but would require, here too, some interior decoration work.
The parklands
A wrought iron gate surrounded by hedges opens at the bottom of the path. At the top of the path, the main driveway crosses the woods of approx. three hectares and leads to the house. The house is surrounded by forest and also benefits from views over the valley. Other paths lead to the edge of the forest ideal for long forest walks or down to a cave and towards the plains.
A large garage with room for two cars is extended by a simple garden shed. This is where the owners currently store all their garden tools and furniture in the winter.

Our opinion

The house needs to be refreshed. It has preserved the distinctive characteristics of this type of building. A little secluded retreat in the middle of the woods dominating the countryside given its elevated position with only trees as neighbours. The elves are not far away. The property is magical with its mushrooms, deer, and wild berries close by and it is just ten minutes from the Crépy-en-Valois train station linking it directly to Paris in forty minutes. This house may therefore be used as a country house but also a home for those working in Paris.
