Marly-le-Roi, YVELINES paris 78160 FR

Location

Situated between Versailles and Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Marly-le-Roi really prospered when Louis XIV commissioned Jules-Hardouin Mansart to build a castle there. More secluded than Versailles, the former was intended to house the king’s close relatives. Following the construction of the castle, the Vieux-Marly district was made up of mansion and manor houses. The village never ceased to attract celebrities, whether in 19th century with numerous novelists and playwrights or in 20th century with painters such as Sisley or Picasso. Today, Marly is linked to Paris by the A86 and A13 motorways, or by train to La Défense in 20 min and the Saint-Lazare train station in 35 min. The property is just a few minutes from shops and 500 m from the train station and different schools.

Description

In the heart of the old village of Marly-le-Roi, the house, built in 1860 by a family member of the current owners, is a minute away from the Saint-Vigor church and the Marly National Estate and Park. A small courtyard used as a garden leads to the main entrance to the house. The ground floor comprises an entrance hall, a double through-sitting room with fireplace as well as a kitchen dominating the garden which can be accessed by a stone staircase. In the upper floors, there are five bedrooms, a bathroom and a shower room. In the basement there is a boiler room also used as a laundry room and a large storage room. Another room opens on to the garden. The house is very luminous and unoverlooked, and provides beautiful views of the surrounding monuments on one side and unobstructed views of the countryside on the other.

The house

Typical mid-19th century construction, the house spans three storeys including a garret floor: a ground floor, two upper floors and a partially garden-level basement. It has a slate clad Mansard roof.

Ground floor
On the same level as the garden-courtyard. The entrance opens in to a very luminous corridor with cement floor tiles and incorporates the wooden staircase to the upper floors. Double doors open in to a double-aspect living area. It comprises a sitting room area with two windows looking out on to the courtyard and a dining room area, featuring an alcove and leading to the kitchen that dominates the garden. A partition with two semi-circular openings and a large passageway, shape the room. The curves of the fireplace, the partition openings and the alcove contrast with the stripes of the herringbone parquet flooring while simple foliage-motif mouldings decorate the sitting room ceiling. Access to the garden is via the French windows in the dining room and a stone staircase. The kitchen, to be rearranged, is currently opposite the entrance hall and is separate from the living room. It could easily be made into one large room or just a partially open room.
First floor
A skylight illuminates the elegant curves of the staircase. A landing leads to the rooms on this level: two parquet-floored bedrooms one of which has numerous cupboards and a small washroom, a toilet and a large bathroom with a toilet.
Second floor
Three bedrooms and a shower room complete this level. Just like on the first floor, all the rooms are luminous and very spacious with beautiful views of the garden.

Our opinion

This much sought-after location, in the old village, close to the park is enhanced by the magnificent views of the surrounding historic monuments: Saint-Vigor church, Chateau de Verduron and its alignment of sphinxes and also the neighbouring countryside and forests. Originally designed to accommodate a family very comfortably, you will no doubt be seduced by the simple good taste of the property, its large spacious rooms and the space occupied by the garden.
