In the midst of the French department of Calvados, 17 km from Bayeux train station and 30 km from that of Caen. Villers-Bocage, less than 10 km away, has all the shops and amenities of a town with 3,000 inhabitants. Deauville, Caen and Rennes are within easy reach courtesy of the proximity of the A84 motorway. Omaha Beach and Arromanches, both emblematic of events during the Second World War, are 30 minutes away.
The old Seigneury to which this property was attached dates back to the 14th century. Three castles succeeded one another in the Middle-Ages up until the 19th century which is when the alleyway, the landscaped parklands, the outbuildings and the orangery were constructed. Nowadays, time and destiny have taken their toll and the castle is no longer in existence. The orangery was initially converted into a house. Bordered by an open veranda supported on brick pillars, it features tall openings. A wooden framed, contemporary extension was recently added. It was designed in keeping with the architectural codes of the orangery: closed on the north side, widely open on the south side. A small conservatory acts as a reminder of the original vocation of the place. The transformation of the orangery and the construction of the extension were confided to a renowned architect who ensured that the harmony between the buildings and the parklands was preserved. The house is flanked, on one side, by an extension, used as a garage, a workshop and a laundry room. The contemporary extension was constructed on the opposite side.
Isolated but not forsaken, this residence appears to be in the middle of nowhere, despite being near to the motorway. Visitors’ attention is immediately drawn as they go along the access pathway by a little, dense wood. Their curiosity is piqued as they come to a stop as only the addition of the modern and the old can be glimpsed. There are few clues but the desire to explore is strong and it will be more than satisfied. The serenity of the parklands and the lawns is reflected in the residence’s wide openings, both original and contemporary.
For everyday life, near to three economic centres, the orangery and its stone appearance will inspire protective feelings and the modern extension a warm, comfortable well-being. For others in search of peace and quiet, harmony takes pride of place, together with tranquillity and restfulness.
