In 14 hectares of parklands on the borders of the Touraine region,
a 19th century, Italian-style chateau
Tours, INDRE-ET-LOIRE center-val-de-loire 37000 FR

210 km from Paris and 8 km from the A10 motorway. 30 minutes from Tours or Vendôme and their TGV train stations. Between the Loire and Loir Valleys. In Castelrenaudais, a land of woods and extensive farmland, undulating gently between the steep-sided valleys. 4 km from a town with 5,000 inhabitants.

This was originally an old fiefdom of the Middle-Ages, of which there are but few vestiges. This chateau was constructed at the end of the 19th century on orders from Major Koszuski. It is a rather eclectic building, somewhat dominated by the neo-Renaissance style, with a mixture of styles, eras and materials. The square pavilion tower was inspired by the Torre-di-Arnolfo-di-Cambio from Florence’s Palazzo-Vecchio. The chateau’s main, south-west-facing facade stands looking out over the parklands and the 9 hectares of woods, an oak seedling forest. Superb alleyways slope down to the meadows and the river. The outbuildings, on the north and east sides of the old estate, are no longer a part of the property.

The chateau

With stripes of red brick and white stone upstairs and plain white stone on the ground floor, the main facade features various types of windows. Single or double casement or two matching, rectangular or arched windows, all framed with a variety of decorative features. Two perfectly symmetrical entrance doors, both reached via a porch topped with a terrace. A protruding pavilion on one side; a tower on the other. The slate roof features various types of roof dormers. The north-east facade has no decorative features.

Ground floor
One vestibule provides access to a dining room on one side, a small lounge on the other, the kitchen and the pantry. The other vestibule, at the other end, leads to a study, a large lounge, a toilet and other utility rooms. Herringbone pattern, oak wood parquet flooring and panelling are to be found in the reception rooms, with cement floor tiles in the vestibules and utility rooms. Each vestibule also houses a stairway going upstairs.
First floor
Between the two landings, a long corridor provides access to six bedrooms and a bathroom, with a toilet. The parquet flooring is made of pitch-pine.
Between the two landings are three old staff bedrooms and a large room in use as an attic. The tower houses a fourth bedroom. The parquet flooring is again made of pitch-pine.
The square tower houses a stairway leading to the terrace. On one side, the chateau’s utility rooms, on the other, a self-contained, 4-roomed flat.
Caretaker’s accommodation
This house is currently rented. Comprising four rooms, it adjoins the east facade of the chateau.

Our opinion

Within easy reach of Paris, in the peace and quiet unique to large open spaces and yet with discreet neighbours nearby, this building is but waiting for its splendour of yesteryear to be restored. Works to install modern-day home comforts are essential, beginning with the redoing of the roof.
The rehabilitation of a building of this quality, in these outstanding wooded parklands, would not be a waste of money. Residents will always appreciate the pleasure of restoring and living in such premises.
