Ten minutes from Tours town centre, in landscaped parklands,
a large, luxurious home dating from the early 20th century
Tours, INDRE-ET-LOIRE center-val-de-loire 37000 FR

Just a stone’s throw from the banks of the river Loire. The historic town centre of Tours is but 10 minutes away by car or bus and just a few extra minutes on foot or by bicycle. Local shops and all schools are within easy walking distance.
The TGV train station, also only 10 minutes away, provides 1-hour links to Paris.

The north facade of this house can be reached on foot via a little quiet street. The south facade dominates a large, wooded garden sloping down towards the river Loire.
There are many entrances on the road and garden sides: for vehicles, a garage off the street and gates that open on to the property. For pedestrians, an entrance gate off the street as well as a wrought iron wicket gate in the garden. This predominantly south-facing house looks out over its wooded parklands.

The house

This house was constructed during the first half of the 20th century from quarry stone blocks and freestone, enhanced with red brick. Covered with slate, the roof is completely surrounded by a frieze of wooden fretwork. The many windows, of various sizes and functions, break the monotony of strictly rectilinear facades. All the windows on the top floor are topped with a semi-circular arch, composed of freestone and featuring a raised keystone. The other, bigger openings, are mullioned windows, topped with decorative brick arches.
The house’s distinctive interior layout is perfectly in keeping with the downward sloping land between the street and the garden.

Ground floor
The main door on the road side opens into a spacious entrance hall with, on one side, the stairway with its wrought iron railings and, on the other, a cloakroom with a toilet. This area provides access to three bedrooms, all with parquet flooring and facing south over the garden. A bedroom with a fireplace; two others with a bathroom and toilet.
Garden level
The garden level is reached via a stairway going down from the main entrance hall. All the living rooms intercommunicate and look out over the garden. Large windows open on the south side. Two lounges with parquet flooring and a fireplace, adjoin one another and form a single room when the separation doors are opened. A spacious kitchen has two doors opening on to the garden: one on the drive side and one on the garden side, with its porch and wrought iron railings. A back kitchen, a linen room, a toilet and a door to the cellar complete this level.
First floor
This level, with parquet flooring throughout, comprises three bedrooms. One of the latter has its own shower room. Facing south, they all have a marble fireplace. The third bedroom has its own shower room and toilet.

The outbuildings

A garage off the street, a workshop and a canopy as well as a wine cellar and a large cellar reached from inside the house or via the garden.

The garden

This south-facing, fully enclosed garden spans a surface area of approx. 3,200 m². The house, standing on its upper section, opens on to the street and dominates the plot. The greater part of the parklands, laid out on a slightly lower level and including an old atrium and a rose garden, is enclosed by walls.
Completely unoverlooked and nuisance free, it is planted with various species, notably of fruit trees.

Our opinion

Set between town and country, this house, with its interior layout and facade decoration characteristic of middle-class houses during the Belle-Époque, could give the impression of a holiday home. And yet, the pleasant way of life that it exudes, together with its home comforts encourage residents to live there all year round. The minor interior works that are required will enable its new owners to add their own personal touches.
