Location

Port-Grimaud, often called the “Venice of Provence”, is a private lakeside village set in the midst of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. Founded in 1966 by architect Spoerry, it gained 20th Century Heritage listing in 2002. Composed of houses featuring the Provencal style and more generally Mediterranean influences, the lakeside village of Port-Grimaud, crisscrossed with canals, symbolises a sailor’s dream, by providing each house with its own docking ring. In addition to its beaches and all its possible water sports, Port-Grimaud also gives access to the hinterland, dotted with perched, typically Provencal villages, and therefore offering superb walks and breath-taking points of view.
It can be reached via the TGV train (shuttle bus from Saint-Raphaël station in 55 minutes), Toulon airport, 50 minutes away or via the A57 motorway, some 30 minutes away.

Description

This house, access to which is controlled by a barrier, stands in the very centre of the village. It can be reached by car (out of season), four parking spaces being reserved for the property outside of the lakeside town. (A free bus service takes residents to the town centre in full season). A little garden (approx. 54 m²) on the west side, planted with oleander bushes and pine trees, opens on to a private street where the facades of the houses, enhanced with six windows and featuring a variety of ochre hues, are harmoniously aligned in keeping with the architect’s design. This property, resulting from the joining of two fishermen’s houses, was fully renovated in 2008 and 2012. On the sea side, access can be gained by boat, the mooring for which is on a large terrace. Two boats (less than 20 m long) or a large catamaran can easily be docked there.

Ground floor
The house is accessed via the garden, enclosed by a low stone wall. The two colours of the facade and the shutters, are typical of the local architectural style and produce an effect visible from the street or the sea, a reminder of the fact that it was originally two separate houses. A semi-circular arched door opens directly into the entrance hall at the foot of a stairway. All the rooms on this level (lounge, dining room and open-plan kitchen) intercommunicate via wide openings, giving a strong impression of space. The view from the lounge and dining room is that of an incessant ballet, performed by the boats coming and going from the port. Two straight French windows, on the sea side, provide access to the terrace.
First floor
A single central stairway provides access to the floors of these united houses. On this level are a bedroom, with a shower room and toilet, three other bedrooms, with shower rooms, and a toilet, all reached via a corridor. Two bedrooms have a view of the sea, the others look out over the quiet street.
Second floor
A stairway, with terracotta treads and wooden nosing, provides access to two bedrooms, each with a large shower room and toilet. These two bedrooms, with oak wood parquet flooring, open on to a balcony on the sea side, with a view of the port as well as the town of Saint-Tropez.

Our opinion

In the summer season, the frenzy of this town in no way disturbs the tranquillity of these premises, quite the contrary. Mooring their boat right by their house and being able to accommodate that of friends sharing the same hobby during a stopover, has to be the dream of all sailors? The house is tastefully and yet soberly laid out: a true invitation to travel.
