In a village to the south of the river Loire, a 15-century home
with guest house, garden and underground courtyard
Saumur, MAINE-ET-LOIRE pays-de-loire 49400 FR

Location

In a village among vineyards, near the shops and amenities of Saumur, including a railway station with links to Angers, Tours and Paris. The A85 motorway is 15 minutes away. Near the Unesco world heritage area of the Loire Valley and its many picturesque villages.

Description

The house stands perpendicular to one of the village streets. From the street, a gate opens onto the garden and a troglodyte dwelling before the house. Another gate opens to an alley behind which leads to a courtyard to the west of the house. The courtyard is flanked by an outbuilding, pool, garage and workshop. A wall encloses the entire property.

The house

The house comprises two buildings. One built in the 15th century, the other more recent. Built of whitewashed rubble stone and tufa, it has two stories, one beneath the eaves. The roof has slate tiles. The façade has a mullion window and a dormer window, both tufa.

Garden level
A stone staircase leads from the garden or the courtyard to several underground rooms: a 35m² summer dining room with tufa fireplace, a former press-house (55m² approx.), a wine store, a wood store, a boiler room and a former oven.
Ground floor
A double entrance hall communicates with the front garden and the back alley and leads to the kitchen on one side and the living room on the other. A toilet is also accessed from the hall, which features an impressive wooden staircase and a former cooker. Tufa fireplaces in both rooms. The one in the living room is monumental. Exposed beams on the ceiling. White terracotta tile flooring. The kitchen floor has a cabochon pattern. Both rooms open onto patios which lead onto the garden and the courtyard.
First floor
The landing leads to two bedrooms and a bathroom. Terracotta floor tiles throughout. Large cupboards in one of the two bedrooms.

The garden

In front of the house, a garden is set around a troglodyte courtyard reached via a stone staircase. To the west, a heated swimming pool, wooden deck and pergola. From behind the house, the pool is reached via a courtyard. The garden also features a well.

Our opinion

The village’s period feel is intact and the peacefulness is remarkable. The perfect place to relax. Indeed, this property could be a comfortable retreat. Lounge around the pool between long walks. There are plenty of places to visit: the banks of the Loire and the many villages along the river and the royal abbey of Fontevraud, among others. Saumur is a short distance away. A comfortable residence with magnetic charm for a laid-back lifestyle.
