between the Poitou, Touraine and Anjou regions
The farming, vine-growing and forestry wealth of this land, where the borders of the Poitou, Touraine and Anjou regions meet, ranks the area amongst France’s greatest territories, but its fame also comes from its literary and political wealth. Landscapes of forests, vines and fields are a source of ever-varied vistas, ideal for taking a walk. Boating on the river Loire is possible just a stone’s throw from the priory, as the historic towns of Fontevraud, Chinon and Saumur are less than 20 minutes away, just like Montreuil-Bellay and Loudun. But it is Chinon that is famous for local delicacies such as “tarte vigneronne” and wine jams. Paris is just over 3 hours away by car, 2⅓ hours from Saumur or 1½ hours (by TGV train) from Châtellerault, a 45-minute car drive away.
Two buildings, united long ago, now form the current house. The north facade looks out over the courtyard and, like all the other buildings, it is constructed from exposed stone and features doors, windows and French windows (double-glazed). The opposing, south-facing facade opens on to the garden.
An entrance hall provides access to a lounge, a guest toilet, a dining room and, following on from the latter, a kitchen, a bedroom and a shower room. (It also houses the stairway going up to the first floor.) A fireplace, with a wooden mantel, takes pride of place in the spacious lounge, at the other end of which is an old bread oven. A wooden stairway goes up from the lounge to the first floor of one of the two united sections, another stairway providing access to the first floor of the other section. A beam system delimits the ceiling with impressive beams, no doubt crafted in the 14th century from unhewn trunks taken from the surrounding woods. With the exception of the shower room, all the rooms have French windows, making it easy to access the courtyard and the garden. Floors are covered with terracotta tiles in the reception rooms and more modern tiles in the others.
The wooden stairway in the ground floor lounge goes up to a small landing providing access to a bedroom, a bathroom, with a shower and a toilet, and a dressing room. This through bedroom faces north and south. Its decorative features include a stone fireplace, with meticulous motifs, and terracotta floor tiles.
The other section, reached via the stairway in the entrance hall, comprises a space under a sloping ceiling, divided into two adjoining areas: one in use as a study and the other as a bedroom.
The guest house
Overlooking the courtyard on the south side, this guest house features the same architectural aesthetics as the other buildings.
A French window opens into a living room and an open-plan kitchen. A fireplace immediately impresses visitors. A laundry room and a toilet are also laid out on this level. There are modern floor tiles throughout.
The landing, reached via a wooden stairway, provides access to two bedrooms and a bathroom, with a toilet.
Renovation works have been started on the barn. The large area on the ground floor is taken up by a kitchen awaiting conversion. The ceiling in this extremely spacious barn goes up to a height of approx. 6 m. A mezzanine has been created and is laid out as a bedroom and a shower room, with a toilet. This barn, also fitted with its own domestic hot water heater, has wooden flooring.
The outbuildings include a covered area and various buildings housing a laundry room, a boiler room and storage areas. The covered area can take three cars.
Rosebushes reign supreme on these premises, divided into eight squares, along the walls and bordering the property. Their fragrance fills the garden when they are in bloom. Fruit trees, such as cherry, vineyard peach, apple and fig, are a guarantee of jam all year round and toppings for summer tarts. Other species include a weeping willow, lime, walnut and sweet chestnut trees. A 5x10 m swimming pool is protected (enclosed) and in no way spoils the harmony of the premises. A water well, fitted with a pump, is an essential asset for a gardener.
The number of roses here would have encouraged Ronsard to take a stroll on the arm of a young girl. It is a theatrical play put on between courtyard and garden, between stone and vegetation. And the end of the property’s story is still to be written. These premises are well-suited to a communal way of life, whether members of a family, friends, or paying guests, and their various sections can be adapted to these different situations. A stream, just beyond the end of the property, will revive those with “les esprits tout ennuyés” (bored minds), Ronsard’s poem in which he extols Mother Nature’s beneficial effects.
