Location

This flat, but a stone’s throw from the Panthéon, is between Rue-Soufflot and Rue-Pierre-et-Marie-Curie, in the quiet Rue-Saint-Jacques, which is none other than the oldest street in the French capital. Although the main road to the Lutetia arenas during the Roman era, it was also used in medieval times by numerous pilgrims making their way to Santiago-de-Compostela. Nowadays, the district abounds in prestigious buildings and exudes an intellectual atmosphere: the École-Normale-Supérieure, the French Sénat as well as the Henri-IV and Louis-Le-Grand sixth form colleges are all nearby as is Sainte-Geneviève library. Students from these prestigious schools and politicians fill the terraces of cafés such as Polidor, where Ionesco, Paul-Valéry and Boris-Vian liked to get together. Luxembourg RER train station is nearby as are several bus stops.

Description

This dressed stone building was constructed in the 17th century. It is part of the architectural anthology of the early modern times in Rue-Saint-Jacques. The carriage door, dating from the time of Louis XIII, is marked by strong limestone buttresses and provides access to the carriage passageway, extended by a paved, wooded courtyard. This fourth floor flat can be reached via a wooden stairway, with terracotta-tiled steps.
Spanning a floor surface area of 61 m² and facing east-west, the flat initially opens into a little corridor. This leads to a first bedroom, with a wardrobe, then to a bright, 20 m² living room. Three windows provide unobstructed views of the facades along Rue-Saint-Jacques and the dome of the Panthéon. Next to it are a second, 10 m² bedroom and a bathroom. A spacious kitchen looks out via a tall window over the co-owned building’s inner paved and landscaped courtyard.

A delightful flat

Visitors entering this flat become immediately aware of its luminosity, its tranquillity and its view. The light, coming in from the east and west, diffuses a uniform clarity throughout all of its rooms. The 20 m² living room, adorned with cap moulding and white walls, is laid out around a Louis XV style, red marble fireplace. The strip pattern, oak wood parquet flooring extends into the neighbouring bedroom where numerous built-in cupboards have been added. Three windows, with moulded embrasures, look out over a panoramic view composed of the street’s old facades and their zinc roofs. It is also possible to see the rooflight on the dome of the Panthéon.
The white-painted kitchen, on the inner courtyard side, is big enough to include an eating area. With beige stoneware floor tiles, it has an unobstructed view from the windows, enhanced with foliage. It is followed by an equally bright bathroom, with Burgundy stone floor tiles. On the other side of the entrance hall, preceded by a wardrobe, is a small, 9 m² bedroom, with herringbone pattern parquet flooring.

Our opinion

The superb stairway in the 17th century building, equal in quality to this bright, quiet flat, is the object of a rehabilitation project. The premises are functional, airy and bear witness to good taste. Immaculately kept, each original decorative feature has been enhanced through the use of a palette of the most elegant, well-blended colours. In the midst of the mythical Latin district, where food shops and cultural centres abound, its high floor guarantees a clear view over the Left Bank, taking in slate roofs, classical facades and the dome of the Panthéon, famous the world over.
