A flat facing the Bois-de-Boulogne, with a view of the Eiffel Tower
and the LVMH Foundation building, on one of Neuilly-sur-Seine’s famous avenues
Neuilly-sur-Seine, HAUTS-DE-SEINE paris 92200 FR

The 846 ha of the current-day Bois-de-Boulogne are what remains of Rouvray Forest, once vast royal hunting grounds. 19 hectares were assigned to the Acclimatation Gardens based on the idea of zoologist, Isidore-Geoffroy-St-Hilaire, that of creating an area for acclimating species of exotic animals for farming, commercial and leisure purposes. Gabriel-Davioud, Baron-Haussmann’s eclectic architect supervised the project. Jean-Pierre-Barrillet-Deschamps, head gardener for all the parks in the city of Paris at that time and whose general principles still rule the composition of landscape gardens today, turned it into one of the first ever landscape gardens in France. This flat faces south.

The building is an outstanding example of a luxury, dressed stone building from the late 19th century, with bas-reliefs, sculpted medallions and black-painted wrought ironwork. The large, double, glass and wrought iron doors are to be found at the end of an alleyway, bordered by planted flower beds, reached via a first set of wrought iron gates on the avenue. The communal areas are entirely clad in dressed stone and columns mark the passageways and entrances. Twin lifts, with wrought iron doors, face a quarter-turning dressed stone stairway. The interwoven fan and foliated scrolls of the railings stand out in the light which comes from high casement windows in the stairwell. A thick carpet runner, covering the steps and risers, continues on each landing, and double, basket handle arch, oak wood doors for the two flats per floor are set in the corners.
This flat’s entrance gallery provides access, left, to three adjoining rooms on the facade, two of which are completely lined with solid oak wood panelling: a living room and a study which can be separated by a sliding door. A Louis XV fireplace decorates one of the lounge walls. They precede the master suite, with a dressing room and a bathroom. On the right-hand side of the entrance gallery is a guest toilet and a cloakroom with, further on, a door to a vast kitchen. A dining room, its walls painted with character scenes, can take a table able to seat more than twelve people. A corridor leads to two bedrooms and a shower room as well as storage areas and a toilet. A door, at the end of this corridor, precedes ten or so steps that lead to a laundry room, followed by three rooms, a shower room, a separate toilet and a small kitchen. This section, accommodation for domestic staff, can also be reached via a back stairway and the service lift.

Our opinion

Resembling sails, the roofs of the museum constructed by Frank-Gehry rise up out of the verdant sea formed by the Bois-de-Boulogne. Equally as distinctive in the semi-urban, semi-rural landscape, the Eiffel Tower is the ever-visible symbol of an anchorage, here, in the French capital. The beautifully finished, opulent building is but a reflection of Neuilly-sur-Seine. And the flat, with its adjoining staff accommodation, is obviously ideally suited not only to a comfortable family way of life, but also to sparkling receptions. Guests will notably admire the dining room walls and their pictorial scenes such as this mysterious return from a fishing trip which can but fire the imagination.
