This flat is in the midst of Paris’ 4th arrondissement, on a very busy street in the lively Marais district, with all of its culture. Rue-de-la-Verrerie takes its name from the glassworks that existed there in 1185. This street is notably the address of the Azzedine-Alaia Foundation, set up in a warehouse that once belonged to the BHV, Bazar-de-l’Hôtel-de-Ville, department store and which has been used as an exhibition hall and for fashion shows since 2007. Hôtel-de-Ville and Saint-Paul underground stations are within easy walking distance.


The Marais district abounds in historic monuments, notably mansion houses dating back to the Renaissance period. It is also one of the French capital’s most captivating districts with its museums, art galleries, restaurants, cafés and boutiques.
The BHV department store and the shops along Rue-de-Rivoli are nearby, whilst museums and Place-des-Vosges are but a few minutes’ walk away. The district is extremely lively, with numerous bars, restaurants and food shops as well as schools and nurseries. Baudoyer market, held every Wednesday and Saturday, offers a large range of quality foodstuffs. Hôtel-de-Ville and Saint-Paul underground stations are nearby.
This 88 m² flat is part of a 17th century building. In a very good state of repair, it is on the third and a half floor. It comprises an entrance hall, opening directly into a dining room, a double, through lounge, two bedrooms, one of which has its own shower room, a bathroom and a separate toilet. The original décor, featuring massive oak wood beams, exposed stone, floor tiles laid in a chessboard pattern and a marble fireplace, has been preserved. Double aspect, it faces south and north.

The flat

Exposed beams are to be seen as of the entrance hall to the building, constructed in the 17th century. The stairway leading to the flat stands out courtesy of its Majorelle blue hues. The communal areas were recently renovated.
The flat’s entrance hall opens directly into a vast dining room, illuminated via a large, east-facing window. Several old features have been harmoniously integrated into top quality, contemporary renovation works. Massive, exposed, oak wood beams bestow this room with the charm of a Norman home, a feeling that is reinforced by its exposed stone wall. The large, small-paned window illuminates the patina of the old floor tiles, laid in a chessboard pattern.
It precedes a double lounge, following on the left-hand side. The wall moulding provides refined relief to this room which is steeped in light via two small-paned windows. A trumeau enhances a marble fireplace which can but contribute to its conviviality on a cold winter’s evening. Cleverly arranged storage areas optimise available space. A corridor provides access to a child’s bedroom or study, followed by a master bedroom, with an adjoining shower room and a separate toilet. Majorelle hues are also to be found in the bathroom.

Our opinion

Many pages of Paris’ political, intellectual and social history have been written in the Marais district: the mansion houses adorning the streets bear witness to this as do many buildings, like the one housing this flat which successfully summarises eras and styles. Half-timbering, exposed beams and the subtle colours of the old tiles are so impressive that contemporary decoration can be added as an enhancement. This harmonious setting still features a few 19th century touches such as the lounge fireplace. The floor surface area and the layout are those that do not sacrifice festive moments for the tranquillity of a small family.
