A 2-storey flat under the rafters, with two bedrooms and
an impressive cathedral-ceilinged living room, on Ile-Saint-Louis

Paris, PARIS ile-de-france 75004 FR

“It’s an island of the moment, of silence and the seasons that pass. A provincial island just off Paris...”. Thus spoke Frédéric-Vitoux, a writer who has always lived on Ile-Saint-Louis. It is true that this island in the centre of Paris is a very special, still unspoilt place. Visitors can stroll along the Seine embankments or Rue-Saint-Louis-en-l'île, the main road crossing the island from east to west which holds some superb surprises, particularly architectural ones. By looking upwards, visitors can see some outstanding mansion houses and if they manage to see past some of the carriage gates they will catch glimpses of the delightful courtyards on the other side.
Gastronomic enthusiasts will also be thrilled to find some excellent food shops (bakeries, butchers, cheesemongers, etc.) as well as some renowned restaurants. An RER train line B station (direct links to Roissy-CDG) and other underground lines and bus routes going to all parts of Paris from either side of the island are but a stone’s throw away.

The building, constructed in the 17th century, stands in a little street, off of Rue-Saint-Louis-en-l’île, leading to Quai-d’Orléans. A door, protected via an interphone security system, opens into a corridor. The left-hand wall is lined with letterboxes. A wrought metal door at the end provides access to the cellars. A wooden and terracotta tile stairway, with wrought iron railings, goes upstairs. The immaculately kept communal areas were recently redone.
This flat takes up the top two levels on the 4th and 5th floors. A large entrance hall provides access to two bedrooms, a shower room and a toilet as well as to a dressing room. A private stairway goes to the living room, with its cathedral ceiling and a sober, fully fitted open-plan kitchen area. The numerous windows face south-east and west, giving clear views over the Parisian sky and rooftops.

The 2-storey flat

The 2-storey flat
The front door on the fourth floor opens into a spacious entrance hall which could house a study area. Laid out in a star-shape, it provides access to all the rooms. A first bedroom has two windows and a large cupboard. Next to it, a second bedroom has sliding doors and a window. Both feature exposed ceiling beams and oak wood parquet flooring. The shower room, with its toilet, has a window overlooking a small courtyard, just like the adjoining dressing room.
A wooden stairway, with wrought iron railings, goes up to the fifth floor where the living room and its cathedral ceiling feature exposed ceiling beams and half-timbering. Three windows overlooking the street and three small skylights face south-east with views of the rooftops and sky. A marble and small brick fireplace and oak wood parquet flooring contribute to this room’s warm, welcoming atmosphere. A fitted kitchen area is soberly laid out on the right-hand side, with vertical roofing framework beams and a lower ceiling separating it from the lounge. Light and ventilation are provided by two windows, overlooking the courtyard on the north and west sides, and by two skylights. A toilet with a wash-hand basin has been discreetly installed near a cupboard.
This air-conditioned flat has undergone first-class works and is in a good state of repair.

Our opinion

Where have Parisian rooftops more evocative power than on Ile Saint-Louis? What better place to extol the virtues of the beauty of the skies in the Ile-de-France region than in its very centre? Here, spaciousness and airiness are also inside the flat. The circumvolutions of the wrought ironwork contrast beautifully with the straight lines of the roofing framework of the bright cathedral ceiling. The sober design of the fireplace will in no way hinder the quality of fireside conversation. The architecture of the shelves is yet another motivating force for purchasing this immaculate home.
