The building is in Place-du-Panthéon, with a view of the famous monument, home to the remains of distinguished French citizens to whom the country owes its gratitude. The superb neo-classical dome of the old Sainte-Geneviève church, designed by Soufflot, stands with its pure, powerful lines facing the windows of this flat’s reception rooms.
The Lycée-Henri-IV, once Sainte-Geneviève abbey, takes up the east side of the square, together with Saint-Etienne-du-Mont church, the Renaissance facade and the Gothic rood screen of which delight enthusiasts of architecture. The Sainte-Geneviève library, the Panthéon-Sorbonne law university and, on the other side of Rue-Soufflot, the town hall for Paris’ 5th arrondissement, make up one of the French capitals most beautiful urban landscapes.
Rue-Soufflot, like a true royal way, links the square to Luxembourg Gardens.
This 5th floor flat is reached via a stairway, illuminated via daylight through stained glass windows, and via a lift. Double landing doors open into an entrance gallery, with cupboards, which leads straight on into two reception rooms. The lounge, looking out via two windows on to Place-du-Panthéon, and the dining room, illuminated via a wide bay window with all the features of the Haussmannian style flats such as herringbone pattern oak wood parquet flooring, moulding, wrought cornices and a Louis XVI style white marble fireplace, topped with a trumeau mirror, with a gilt moulded surround. Large, 4-leaf, glazed doors can be used to separate the rooms as required. Copious amounts of light flood in and the view of Place-du-Panthéon resembles that of a postcard, with masses of historic monuments appearing to be nestling under the protective wing of Soufflot’s enormous dome.
The gallery leads left to a large fully fitted kitchen with a counter which can be used for taking breakfast or having a snack. The dining room is next door for meals with family or friends.
The television lounge looks out over a large inner courtyard. It has a white marble fireplace, with a trumeau mirror featuring a gilt wooden frame, and cupboards. It provides access to a recently decorated shower room and a toilet as well as a corridor leading to the bedrooms.
All three bedrooms have windows overlooking the inner, wooded, peaceful courtyard.
The second bathroom, with a laundry room area, is in need of some attention (the bath notably needs changing).
The staff bedrooms
The biggest of the two staff bedrooms is laid out with a dressing room, a study area and a double bed.
It looks out over a small courtyard and the lantern on the Panthéon dome stands out against the sky.
The second, smaller bedroom is separated from the first one by a communal toilet. It comprises a little fitted kitchen, and a shower room with a toilet (Sanibroyeur waste macerator).
Paris has a few mythical addresses and Place-du-Panthéon is one of them. It is dominated by the dome of the old Sainte-Geneviève church, now the Panthéon, devoted to distinguished French citizens. Here, an extract of Parisian history blends monuments from the Middle-Ages with classical buildings, in the midst of which have manage to creep a few rare buildings that enable a handful of privileged residents to live in one of the French capital’s most beautiful settings. The best of French schools, such as the Sorbonne are to be found in the vicinity. It is difficult for a flat to live up to such surroundings, this one, however, has succeeded, not only because of the view but also because of its interior decoration and its layout, both bathed in copious amounts of light. The two staff bedrooms are an additional asset should they be required.
