A 147 m² flat and its 21 m² staff studio flat
between La-Sorbonne and Cluny Museum

Paris, PARIS paris 75005 FR

This flat is just a stone’s throw from the Collège-de-France, La-Sorbonne and Cluny Museum, equidistant from Luxembourg Gardens and Notre-Dame, from the Panthéon and Sainte-Chapelle. It is set in the historic and intellectual centre of the French capital. This district is one of those where a typically Parisian art of living exists, in the immediate vicinity of Boulevard-Saint-Michel and Boulevard-Saint-Germain. Cinemas and restaurants, gardens and museums, shops and café terraces are all within walking distance of this flat. The area’s extensive public transport system also makes it possible to reach all four corners of the French capital easily.

The late 19th century building faces the wooded square that links the old Hôtel-des-Abbés-de-Cluny and La-Sorbonne. Its long hall, decorated with marble, veined in different colours, leads to a lift providing access to the five floors, each comprising a single flat.
The entrance hall of this particular flat provides access to a lounge and a dining room, both facing west. They precede a dressing room and a study, with spectacular neo-gothic style, wrought panelling, overlooking an inner courtyard. On the right-hand side, a first hall area leads to the master bedroom, which can also be reached from the lounge, and an adjoining shower room. Another bedroom overlooking the inner courtyard, a separate toilet and a bathroom complete this section of the flat. A corridor leads from the dining room to a last bedroom and a kitchen. A wide bow window in the dining room and the balcony running alongside it, reached via three other French windows on the facade, provide an unobstructed view of trees and the gothic facades of the museum.

The flat

Double landing doors open into an entrance hall which provides direct access to the communicating reception rooms, a 25 m² dining room and a 30 m² lounge, both featuring an unobstructed view of the square. Following on from the lounge, a bedroom, spanning more than 21 m², looks out over Cluny Museum; it has an adjoining shower room. Oak wood parquet flooring reflects the copious amounts of light flooding in from the west through the large bow French windows on a balcony, featuring wrought iron railings with foliage motifs. Wall and ceiling moulding as well as marble fireplaces are just some of the features reminiscent of late 19th century elegance and comfort. The entrance hall also provides access, via a hall area, to a second bedroom, adorned with a fireplace and a showcase, next to a bathroom and a separate toilet. Immediately to the right of the landing door, a dressing room with hanging space, illuminated via a leaded light window overlooking the inner courtyard, precedes a third bedroom or study. This room is completely decorated with neo-gothic style panelling which is continued on the cupboards and the door. Also featuring a fireplace, twisted columns and linen-fold panels, it bears witness to great originality for a Parisian flat. A corridor, lined with cupboards, leads from the dining room to a fourth bedroom, with a fireplace and a wash-hand basin, as well as to a kitchen, with its door leading out on to the back stairway.

The staff studio flat

The joining of two old staff bedrooms on the 6th floor, reached via the back stairway, has created a 21 m² studio flat which is illuminated via an arched window and a skylight. It dominates Paris, with a view looking down into the square as well as the inner courtyard of Cluny Museum.

The cellar

This cellar is on the 2nd basement level. It is laid out in two successive areas, with packed mud floors, and spans a total floor surface area of 13 m².

Our opinion

No-one lives here by chance. Choosing to live between La-Sorbonne and Cluny Museum, very near to the Collège-de-France, is to select the most authentically intellectual, the most cultivated, the most art-intensive and, not forgetting, the most liberated section of Paris. The late 19th century building, so typical of the French capital, is another step towards adopting a lifestyle where nothing is mediocre. The large balcony windows take in the foliage of a square: great minds need peace and quiet. The reception rooms would ideally suit a large family and, of the four bedrooms, the one with neo-gothic decor will surely be the most coveted. Although, the studio flat on the top floor is unrivalled when it comes to a view over Paris. Also renovated, it could equally suit one of the teachers or students that come to the district every day to give or to receive intellectual nourishment.
