Location

This castle, where the regions of Burgundy, Centre and Auvergne meet, stands on land with a rich architectural heritage bequeathed by more than two thousand years of history. Built in the 13th and 14th centuries, it is easily reached despite standing in the middle of exceptional, predominantly unspoilt, natural surroundings. The French bocage countryside is notably outstanding courtesy of its wealth of forests and woods. This property is not far from Tronçais Forest, Europe’s biggest oak tree forest, or from a spa resort, its waters long visited by European aristocracy.
Equidistant from the ocean and the Alps, this region has a mild temperate climate.
The A77 motorway is not far from the castle and a nearby train station provides 3-hour links to Paris-Bercy.

Description

A little country lane, on the outskirts of a village, provides access to the fortified castle via wrought iron gates that open on to the old drawbridge. A deep groove remains on the facade which features the semi-circular arched door, topped with masonry that no doubt crowned a machicolation gallery. Above is the guard room, reached via a few stone steps inside the main courtyard.
This defensive and yet residential building was constructed in the 13th and 14th centuries on the remains of a Gallo-Roman fortification, enclosing a motte on which stands the castle and its outbuildings. It was attacked during the Wars of Religion, following which significant redesigning works were carried out. The nearby old chapel no longer belongs to the property.
The tall buildings flank a vast main courtyard. A very old well, with high coping, is near to the servants’ old dwellings and kitchens as well as the dovecote.
The constructions in the inner courtyard constitute a large L-shaped building, most of which is all on a level and divided into several accessible areas, including a small house with its old bread oven. The courtyard is partially walled and cannot be overlooked despite the proximity of the houses.
The gently sloping property extends over approx. two hectares.

The castle

This rectangular castle features a square stairway tower protruding from the facade and a tower with a round base at the back. It is built over cellars and spans three levels. It is centred around a square tower adjoining the old keep.
The main entrance door is set at the foot of the facade tower. The entrance is raised by the spiral stairway that provides access to the cellar and the floors via oak wood doors. The old arrow-loops have been opened to let in more light. The facades, featuring mullioned windows decorated with leaded lights, are constructed from rendered quarry stone blocks.
The residence is entirely topped with an oak wood roofing framework and a long sloped roof, covered with flat tiles and featuring broken pediment roof dormers. It is in a good general state of repair and its architectural features have been well preserved.


Lower Level 1
The building forms a single room, spanning approx. 83 m², with a French ceiling and two monumental fireplaces. All the windows have mullions and window seats. The floor is paved with terracotta tiles. It still has its original doors and ironwork. This room precedes a vaulted, round kitchen, laid out in a tower and spanning approx. 20 m². There is also a toilet.
First level
This level comprises three bedrooms with their own shower rooms and toilets.
Attic
The attic space is currently undergoing conversion works in a floor surface area of approx. 59 m². The project is to create two bedrooms, each with a bathroom and toilet.

Our opinion

The restoration and conversion works widely undertaken by the current owners would have to be continued in order to live in this castle. This group of buildings is so beautiful, so haughty and yet so pleasant that any true history and architecture enthusiast will immediately want to adopt it. This old fortress, with its tall and low dwellings, with its square and round towers, stands on its motte, dominating a wooded bocage countryside that foreigners see as being specifically French.
