Location

70 minutes from Paris via TGV train, this large residence is near to Laval, in the French department of Mayenne. The road network also makes it easy to move around, notably as far as the Brittany coast.
Rennes, Brittany’s county town, is an hour’s drive away.

Description

This chateau, amongst others, belonged to a rich trader from Laval. Reconstructed in the 17th century, it was redesigned in the 19th century. The chapel dates from 1760 and its dovecote from the 16th century. The family coats-of-arms are on the building facade.
This building stands at the end of a long alleyway, partially surrounded by a dry moat. Gates close the property. The outbuildings, the chapel and the dovecote are laid out around the chateau. French formal gardens behind the residence are enclosed by walls and, on one side, a wood.

The chateau

This chateau, all of its outbuildings and its parklands underwent full restoration works a few years ago. Both the chateau and the parklands are classified on the French Supplementary Historic Monument List. Its total net floor surface area spans approx. 1,000 m² whilst the land registry surface area of the estate is approx. 15 hectares.


Ground floor
An entrance vestibule houses a main stairway. At the end a passageway leads to a kitchen, a back kitchen, a hall area and a toilet. On the left-hand side of the vestibule, a vast dining room, with parquet flooring, is decorated with panelling and a fireplace. On the right-hand side are a row of lounges, with parquet flooring and a study; all featuring extensive modern-day home comforts and quality materials.
First floor
The large wooden stairway goes upstairs, first of all, to four large bedrooms, with bath or shower rooms and toilets. The ceilings are all high. They are followed by another two meticulously decorated bedrooms, cupboards, hanging space and a linen room.
Attic
This level comprises a vast attic, in pristine condition, and a storage room.
Cellar
The cellars can be reached via the inside and the outside of the residence. They comprise a wine cellar and a boiler room area, with new installations.
Reception building
This superb function room has been fully restored and has all necessary amenities such as a kitchen as well as bathroom and toilet facilities.
Dovecote
This extremely elegant building has been converted into a holiday accommodation rental unit. It comprises an attractive upstairs bedroom as well as a shower room and toilet.
The parklands
These parklands are laid out with a superb French formal garden, a vegetable garden and fruit trees. A central, covered well is used for watering purposes. There are also meadows and a lake followed by a wood of tall trees. A long driveway leads to the market town.

Our opinion

This chateau has all the features of its standing. The esplanade on which it was initially constructed is surrounded by a moat which is now dry. It extends, at a slight angle, between a landscaped courtyard and an authentic French formal garden. Featuring horizontal lines, it has seven openings on three levels that make it architecturally harmonious. A small polygonal tower, adjoining the main building, adds a little touch of fantasy. History has dotted several outbuildings, such as a chapel, a dovecote and the old servants’ quarters, throughout the estate, giving it an air of a picture book. It is difficult to fault this wonderful property which is, furthermore, fully restored.
