A 19th century chateau, its parklands, its woods and its swimming pool
10 minutes from Châtellerault TGV train station
Châtellerault, VIENNE poitou-charentes 86100 FR

In the French department of Vienne, 10 minutes from Châtellerault, 40 minutes from Poitiers and their TGV train stations, respectively with 75 and 70-minute links to Paris and 2⅓-hour links to Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle airport. Tours is less than an hour’s drive away.

A lane, off the main road, winds its way through meadows and leads to the walls enclosing the property and to the monumental gates providing access. Once through the latter, a driveway goes between the trees and their protective foliage until it reaches the house’s porch. Woods on the left-hand side stretch as far as the summit of the hill and continue alongside the lane leading to the outbuildings. On the right-hand side in front of the house, the parklands and their grassy areas, dotted with trees over a hundred years old, provide wide open views. Further down beyond the outbuildings is a swimming pool, with its open and covered areas, followed by an orchard and meadows. This property is completely enclosed by walls.

The chateau

This chateau, constructed in the 19th century, has rooms of an exceptional size, with 3.70 m high ceilings and large openings reflecting the vast natural open spaces.

Ground floor
The entrance hall provides immediate access on the right-hand side to a study area, then straight on to a library, with the adjoining dining room and small lounge on either side. The kitchen is reached via the dining room and via the hall, once passed the stairway. The lounge still has its original marble fireplace as well as double doors that lead to the study. The ceilings on this level are 3.70 m high. Parquet flooring covers the floors, with the exception of those in the hall and the kitchen. A corridor leads from the latter to a separate entrance as well as to a laundry room and an area currently in use as a games room. The kitchen, the laundry room as well as the games room open on to a south-west facing terrace where lunch can be taken as of the month of April and dinner can be served during the summer months.
First floor
The landing provides access, on the left-hand side, to a bedroom facing south and west, with a bathroom, including a shower and a toilet, as well as two dressing rooms. Another bedroom, overlooking the facade with its own shower room and toilet, precedes a third bedroom. At the end of the corridor is a small open television room. On the other side are two more bedrooms, a shower room and a toilet. The bedroom windows look indifferently out over the parklands or the woods. A skylight illuminates the corridor on this floor. Parquet flooring covers the floors, with the exception of those in the bathrooms and toilets.
Second floor
This level is still in its original condition with maids’ bedrooms and various water supply points. It would be very easy to create additional bedrooms, with bathrooms and toilets.

The swimming pool

The south-facing, 12x6 m swimming pool is protected on the north side by high walls. A large covered terrace makes it possible to take meals out of the sun. A summer kitchen has been laid out in one of the outbuildings.

The parklands and the woods

Two hectares of parklands enhance the south-west section of the chateau, with a variety of hues, vertical and horizontal lines as well as light and shade. Lebanon cedar trees, over a hundred years old, compete in size with the oak trees.
The oak, however, takes pride of place in the nine hectares of woods. Bridle paths create order throughout.

The outbuildings

The ground floors of the stone outbuildings house areas for sheltering cars and storing farming equipment. Upstairs, a vast attic awaits conversion. Other outbuildings have been constructed, notably for storing wood for the boiler.

Our opinion

This chateau, standing on a gentle slope, reflects symmetry and restraint. It is so welcoming that two people would easily feel as at ease as fifteen. The sober, meticulous renovation works that were carried out will in no way hinder the decorative choices of new owners who will have a totally free rein on the attic floor. A bed and breakfast business would do very well here especially as this estate, with its protective perimeter wall, is not cut off from human activities or the most modern means of transport.
