This property is in the midst of a village in the south-east of France, in the Pilat mountains. A “châtellenie” (an officially recognised castle and its land) in the 13th century, the little medieval village is perched on a rocky spur and dominates the gorges of a river.
Completely razed during the Wars of Religion, it grew up again in the 17th century and has since become home to some superb Renaissance style houses, with mullioned windows and evocative names such as “the hangman’s house”, “the salt loft” and the prebend’s house”, as well as a church dating from the 11th and 17th centuries. An hour from Lyon and Valence and their TGV train stations. The international airport is 1¼ hours away and Geneva 2½ hours away by car.
The 14th century castle
This stone castle, flanked by a round tower, spans four levels. Its facades feature mullioned windows which have been filled with small panes. Although the garden level is used for cellar and outbuilding purposes, the upper levels house two large living rooms and seven bedrooms with a bathroom.
The guest house
With its separate entrance, the guest house adjoining the castle is constructed as a continuation of the building. This stone building is constructed over an area used for outbuilding and cellar purposes on the garden level. It spans two levels of living space and is surrounded by a cascade of terraced gardens. This fully renovated house comprises a kitchen opening on to a dining room and a lounge as well as a toilet on the ground floor. A wooden stairway goes up to the first floor. This level includes two large bedrooms, laid out under the slopes of the roof, a bathroom with a toilet and an open study which could be partitioned to form a third bedroom. This house is ideal for living in whilst works are carried out in the castle, for welcoming family and friends or for creating a holiday accommodation activity.
The citadel and the plots of land
All that remains of the old citadel are its walls. Standing just a stone’s throw from the castle, very near to the church, it dominates the gorges of the little river and has an outstanding view. These walls have all been consolidated. They constitute the perimeter wall of a garden, spanning approx. 600 m², which would make an unusual children’s playground. This property also has several separate plots of land that are dotted around and total a surface area of just under 1½ hectares.
Time appears to be standing still in this particularly picturesque village in the already ancient Pilat regional nature park. The slopes can be rugged and this property reflects that. This castle is of a reasonable size but it awaits renovation works to make it a comfortable place to live. Its many architectural features bearing witness to its long history make it beautiful. The internal layout of the guest house is, however, tasteful and cosy. Furthermore, the ruins of the citadel have not had their last word: they form the prestigious perimeter wall around a garden that presents but one risk that of being annexed as a marvellous playground by the family’s children. And yet it is possible to take them out from there as superb hiking trails roam these distinctive mountains which are, nevertheless, very near to large towns.
