A 17th century chateau, redesigned in the 19th century, and its many outbuildings
set in 15 hectares of meadows and vines in the French department of Ardèche

Tournon-sur-Rhône, ARDECHE rhones-alps 07300 FR

The Rhone Valley north of Valence is narrow. To reach the heights, visitors have to go up into the neighbouring Ardèche hills via the magnificent balcony roads. Following the development of river tourism (cruises along the Rhone), numerous foreign tourists, especially Americans, flock to the small town near the chateau. This town, with its young, lively and dynamic population, hosts several festivals (music, song, theatre, comedy) and exhibitions. It is 30 minutes north of Valence and its TGV train station, with several 2¼-hour daily links to Paris. Lyon-St-Exupéry airport is 1½ hours away by car.

This chateau dominates its parklands. A bridle path winds its way through one hundred year old trees to its terrace. Two rear wings house self-contained living areas. They form a main courtyard, accessed via a road. Constructed in the 17th century, this chateau was redesigned in the 19th century. In 1880, the owner, a wine merchant, commissioned the towers linking both wings to the main residence, thus giving it the appearance and status of a chateau. A chapel was built on the south side, the tower being used as a confessional. Inhabitants from the neighbouring hamlet came to Sunday mass in answer to the peal of the small bell which is still to be seen.
This estate currently spans some 15 hectares of meadows, woods and vines.

The chateau

The main building of this chateau spans three levels, extended on either side by two round towers. The roofs are covered with red tiles. The facades feature exposed stone, but the towers are rendered. Its numerous openings are regularly arranged. A flight of stone steps go up to the front door on the courtyard side. The main facade, facing the parklands, is bordered by a terrace, with a central flight of stone steps. On one side of the chateau, a swimming pool is flanked by wide terraces, lined with open, stone outbuildings.

Ground floor
A vast entrance vestibule, with stone floor tiles, houses a stairway, with wooden steps and wrought iron railings. It provides access to all the ground floor rooms including a study, a kitchen and a dining room, followed by a lounge. The latter two rooms have parquet flooring and open on to a terrace as well as the parklands. All the reception rooms are enhanced with fireplaces. The entrance vestibule also has a toilet. A corridor leads to the cellars and a boiler room as well as to the old chapel, housed in the south tower, which has been converted into a study.
First floor
On a half-floor off the stairway is a bathroom with a toilet. The first floor landing, with parquet flooring, provides access to three large bedrooms, each with a marble fireplace and superb old cupboard doors. There is parquet flooring throughout.
Second floor
The second floor also comprises three bedrooms. The first is vast and has its own bathroom as well as a view over the parklands. A suite, consisting of a spacious bedroom, a little lounge and a private bathroom, communicates with a child’s bedroom.

The two wings of living space

The south wing houses two separate living areas. The first one comprises a lounge, heated by a wood-burning stove, and a kitchen. Parquet flooring blends superbly with the barrel-vaulted ceiling. A stairway goes up to a floor with two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and toilet, laid out under the eaves.
The second one is bigger. In addition to a garage where the boiler room is installed, it comprises a vestibule leading to a lounge, with a stone fireplace. A glazed door opens on to the garden and a terrace. Next to this lounge is a kitchen. Upstairs, there are three bedrooms and bathroom as well as a toilet.
The north wing is also converted into living space, comprising a lounge and a kitchen where a wood-burning stove has been installed in the old stone fireplace to provide a source of heat as necessary. A bedroom with its own bathroom completes the ground floor. A wooden stairway goes upstairs to two bedrooms. These rooms only take up part of the wing and there is a large area, spanning approx. 90 m², still awaiting conversion.

The swimming pool and the outbuildings

Following on from the north wing, but nevertheless independent, is the old stable which has been converted into a function room. It spans approx. 90 m² and looks out over the garden, not far from the swimming pool. It adjoins an old outbuilding, known as the dairy, laid out above a room which once housed the wine press.
Another stone outbuilding comprises four rooms, each spanning approx. 30 m², which are used as a workshop, a pool-house, etc.
A paved alleyway leads to the swimming pool. Installed below the north wing, the pool is surrounded by vast, paved decks. This relaxation area is delimited by stone walls, providing privacy. Large covered areas bordering the swimming pool could accommodate guests during functions.

Our opinion

The originality of the chateau’s history is written in its stone. Good use can be made of the current layout and the possible conversion of its different sections. The various, self-contained living areas would ideally suit some form of a hotel and catering activity. The estate’s 15 hectares are like a summary of a region where the presence of vines is compensated by the continuing existence of woods and meadows.
