Troyes, AUBE champagne-ardennes 10000 FR

3½ hours from Brussels, 2½ hours from Luxembourg, a little more than 2 hours from Paris via the excellent A5 motorway.
About ten minutes away, the outstanding, medieval town of Troyes, with its half-timbered houses and narrow paved streets, is the historic capital of the Champagne region.
In Orient Forest Regional Nature Park, 70,000 hectares of natural surroundings, the biggest forest estate that the Knights Templars held in the West, just five minutes from the great lakes.

The history of the Order of the Temple is closely linked to that of the Champagne region. Hugues-de-Payns, native of a small village near to Troyes, was the founder of the Temple and its first master in the 12th century. Numerous commanderies are dotted throughout the region, enhanced with farms such as this one.
This completely unoverlooked property is remotely set back from a small village and its roads, at the end of a no-through lane.
Surrounded by wire fencing, it comprises a house, two vast outbuildings, a small lake as well as a vegetable garden, enclosed by a wooden fence.

The house

Totally restored over the last ten years, this house is constructed from brick and limestone. Its slightly sprocketed roof is covered with flat tiles and features three hanging dormer windows as well as a pavilion roof dormer, once the entrance to the dovecote.
Its facades are dotted with crosses engraved in the stone as well as hammered vestiges of the Order’s Maltese Cross, surrounded by a circle.
The wooden-framed, double-glazed windows are slightly arched. The deep geothermal heating system is particularly inexpensive to run.
The house is perfectly insulated, bright as well as comfortable and has no need of any works.

Ground floor
Four steps lead from the terrace to a large room, paved with terracotta floor tiles, with a fitted kitchen and a back kitchen, preceded by a dining room which is partially separated by open half-timbering from the lounge. At the end of the latter, visitors’ eyes are drawn to an impressive flat brick fireplace, behind which is a smoking room that opens into a small television room. This level also includes a toilet, a bathroom, a bedroom and a study, where a wide, rectangular picture window has replaced the door of what was the cowshed.
First floor
A light-coloured, oak wood stairway goes up from the lounge to a vast landing which is extended by an area given over to relaxation with a picture window overlooking the countryside.
Three bedrooms, including one with a shower room, a dressing room and a shower room, with a toilet.

Second floor
This unusual area, enhanced by the roofing framework, features a protected walkway linking two small bedrooms, without partitions.

The outbuildings

The property comprises two vast outbuildings, constructed from limestone, brick and half-timbering. Only their flat tile roofs have been restored.
The one nearest to the house is partially converted into a workshop and garage, whilst the second, near to the lake and home to a few ducks, awaits a new vocation.

Our opinion

A somewhat secluded, peaceful property, very near to the great lakes of Orient Forest, there where history has left its mark, that of one of the most mysterious and most illustrious organisations of the Middle-Ages.
The soberness and elegance of these superb buildings blend perfectly and tastefully with their natural setting.
